What are you going to do with it?
When I do finish work there are places where i need a nail but 16 guage is way to big.
I've been wanting a 23 guage for a long time. "There are three kinds of men: The one that learns by reading, the few who learn by observation and the rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves."Will Rogers
Buy a 23. If you want to test it first, buy the HF model, if it works, buy the better gun!
That is what I've been planning on doing. I have a HF near me."There are three kinds of men: The one that learns by reading, the few who learn by observation and the rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves."Will Rogers
An 18 ga is a decent holding smaller nail. The 23 (pinner) is fine for holding glued up small returns. Zip for holding power unless you nail the #### out of it.

"For jamb edge of casing to jamb" that is one of the areas where I would use a pin nailer the most.

Well, we differ there. A pinner has little holding power in that application I feel. However, a 5/8's brad will hold fine, produce a marginal hole and I won't have to worry. I have only a headless pinner, do I remember a 23 ga. headed pin shooter and pins available? That would make some difference.A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.

Yes, the Nikle and the Cadex shoot headed pins/brads. Looks like there's at least one more gun that shoots those now, too.http://www.floydtool.com/pin_nailer.htm'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

Yo Steve. Be interested to know if anyone uses a pinner to fasten the jamb edge of usual house casing........and if they would be using the headed pins.
I have no problem with my pc sinking the pins (non headed) in most materials. Headed? wonder if that would work consistently.

Thanks Big Cal,If we don't get an answer that someone else has already tried the headed pins on the casing, I'd be willing to be the guinea pig on the next room I finish here. What's the worst that could happen? LOL'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

I bought the Harbor Freight 18 gauge nailer on sale for 14.99....after 3 days of heavy use it stopped firing correctly, took it apart to check for jambs and couldn't find the problem. Something's messed up with the spring action as it fires once and then won't return to fire again.
If that is the combo 18 guage nailor and stapler, I have found that it is for light duty use only.
If it is within 90 days of purchase take it back.
Whelp, frammer suggests taking it back. I'd be tempted stepping out back and flinging it down the hill.Must be the Kentucky in me.Another testimonial for buying cheap-wasting your time (not cheap) and then hopefully making a more substantial purchase you can count on.Save the low impulse buy for the hobbyist. Time is not money for them perhaps. And this assumes the HF store is down the street. Pity if it was more than a mile away.Better luck next time.A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.

Actually Calvin, I have bought 3 of them at 12.95 each. Still lesss than the name brand, and limits the time of going to the store to return them.
Even "name" brand guns come with defects. Then you would have to take to the store anyway. My 3 guns are less than one name brans and take up less space than my name brands.
Calvin,I had just bought a new DeWalt compressor on sale and had it in the truck but no air tools with me...I was itching to try my new toy at the jobsite and had some self returns to do that I was going to use the cordless gun on. I'm not going to bother returning it most likely, not worth the wasted time unless I happen to be right next door.Going to do some research and see if Bostitch, Milwaukee, or Senco still makes their guns here in the US. If so I'll pick up one of them.
congrats, grandpa - grandmas never looked so good, eh?"there's enough for everyone"
Thank you David, and as usual........you hit the nail right on the head.A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.

Or until the glue sets up.
Can't help on the nailer (Hitachi here) but if it's the one Amazon has for $36 and change, I'd snag it even if for only a backup. , Myself I'm tempted but but I'm still trying to 'splain to DW why there are so many routers around. As for "Is 18 small enough?" depends on what you want to do with it. Where I worked previously 18 ga. got used more than anything else. Most of our work was prestain - base and casing; the 18 left a smaller hole to fill. The 15/ 16's were saved for doors mostly. A 23ga micropinner is great for returns and cabinet crown.

I have one. I bought it a few years back because it didn't need oil and because I already had a few Bostitch guns. The thing misfires on just about every other shot. I've tried everything to fix it. Bottom line, it sucks. I WOULD NOT BUY IT. I now have a Milwaulkee 18 and a throwaway Campbell Housefeld that both work fine.

Thanks! It was on the tooliday.com deal thing.
I've been getting the emails for a while and I'm getting the impression that the tools they offer are duds nobody wants.

I have that gun - it's a bit coarse for some cabinetry -
I've had not a single misfire with it -
I have read the amazon reviews on many of the finish nailers/pinners - a common complaint about several 23g models is not setting the pins -
any gun with several reviews will have at least one that complains about misfires - I wonder about the source/quality of the nails when most reviews praise and one or two complain about misfiring often -
I've got a 23g pinner (grex) in the queue, but have shot my budget with other purchases right now- I can't reconcile myself to purchasing the HF cheapy after taking a chance on a grizzly pneumatic drill for $20 - should have bought lottery tickets -
Dave it is not bad. I haven't thrown it out, yet!
It is a decent make do, until more money is available gun!>G<
I have recently had 3 of the Bostich BT200K-2 18g nailers, both the latest 2 models. I have had firing pins break in all 3 guns. I thought the Bostich guns where all great, all my other nailers are Bostich but I was thinking about trying out a new Bosch nailer. Anyone have any opinions on these?
I have a Porter Cable 2" 18ga nailer. Its a great gun for nailing all those smaller casing like the 2 1/4" colonial casing or something like that, its long enough (with 2" brads) to reach through the drywall, small enough to nail into the jambs without worrying about splitting and leaves a nice small hole.
I think its perfect for those project using budget trim 16 or 15 just seem to be too much for them, and leaves a more unsightly hole. As far as pin nailers go buy the cheep harbor freight one, I did and its worked great I use it to hold some things together till the glue sets up. For average use I wouldn't spend the big buck that thing will serve the purpose, if you ll be using it everyday spend a little more. I put half a box of pins through mine (1000?) no issues.
I have one of those nailers and it is a POS.
Even if someone were to try to give you one,,,, just say "no thanks".
Guy I work w has a (somewhat old) PC 18ga, and it is a great gun.

Thanks! I'll get the HF gun and see if it will work out.
I'm thinking of not getting tooliday emails any more. "There are three kinds of men: The one that learns by reading, the few who learn by observation and the rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves."Will Rogers
FWIW, I have a (don't flame me ya'll ;-) Craftsman brad nailer that works like a charm and does double duty as a stapler. A drop of ATF in the air hole once in a while is all I've done to keep it humming. Neat tool, one of my favorites.
Found out today that Bosch is now making the Craftsman line of air nailers.
got a link???

That's interesting. Sears must have had a shift in their policy on quality.
I couldn't tell you who made the Craftsman brad nailer that I have but it's a keeper.
Whatever you buy, make sure it uses the standard nails you can buy at the big boxes. One of the brands requires you to use there nails only. Pain in the arse.
