I have been looking at the Dewalt because I have 18V Dewalt tools already.
Anybody have one and is it worth $279?

Been thinking on the same question.
Lowes is tossing in a free battery right now.
Amazon has the DC825 bare tool for $130.Doug
Is that the XRP model #?
I heard Lowes was going to discontinue Dewalt XRP tools but have not seen any on sale tables yet.
I was told and then read a notice that Lowes was discontinuing the XRP line by Dewalt.
They are shifting to the L/I line only.
That is why Lowes here is offering a free battery for the XRP kits sold (drills/impacts/rotos), an inducement to clear the line out . I have been watching and also haven't seen them on the clearance racks, just the added battery so far.
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
do you suppose that is something DW is pushing and not Lowes???

Don't know, been wondering the same myself.
Although Lowes, having limited space for the lines to display may well have mandated that Dewalt simply remove the older line so that display space can be used for the latest and greatest. I just went through that issue with a line of backer board screws. Manufacturers rep told me Lowes forced them to pull one of their screws because of space issues at the displays.

I know just who to ask...
gimme a day or two....
which screws (brands) are you talking about???

Manufacturer was Phillips.
They are a green colored screw approved for Hardie etc.
Phillips 11 I know the information is solid and accurate because I talked to the factory sales people about it.
Quite a little story actually, Lowes was the sole distributor for that particular Phillips screw. Phillips sold other screws through Lowes and other outlets but only the Lowes got the green colored ones.
Lowes corporate decided the space allocation was getting too crowded and mandated the green screws had to go.
Factory people tried hard to remove other screws instead but Lowes insisted.
Funny thing is that according to the factory , the green screws were the best ones they have for Hardi, but Lowes insisted on keeping other Phillips screws and letting the green ones be the ones getting the ax. I had been using them on the winery project last spring and ran out, tried to buy more and ran into the issue of non-availability. Ended up with the factory sending me 2 big tubs gratis since I couldn't buy them any more from Lowes.
Good Company IMO.

know the company...
they were originally the mfgrs for the house brand for HD till HD ran them off and out sourced the screws...
since HD has tried to get their screws back on the shelf because of the dismal failure of the change out.. WTB HD was getting those off shore screws fed back to them six ways to Sunday...
those off shore junkers were the ones I did a thread on a deck failure....
Lowes is suppose to bring back the Philips II screws.... seems there is wide spread customer dissatisfaction with the replacements...
damn if that is what HD did... some never learn...
Caught up with Ron at Lowes... the display set and going Li is because of arm twisting from DW... DW can't better the Competition or fix their problems with the XRP series so it's phase them out or make the XRP tuffer to get and set the displays up so it's DW in yur face and rely on impulse buying instead of better/best product marketing... Hide the competition on the lower shelf outta sight and maybe nobody will see or notice them...

Maybe I will wait and see a while.
Been 32 yrs without one.
I was at a Lowes near Raleigh two days ago -- they had the Dewalt kit with both the 18V drill-driver, and the 18V impact on the clearance table.
$249 for the pair, with a canvas bag to carry them in.
Unfortunately, I don't need either too right now.
No Dewalt on clearance table at my local Lowes yet.
Probably don't need it either. Almost always predrill
what are you running that you need to predrill???

I bought the 14.4v when they first came out and overpaid ($250?) for it.
That said - I love it and have used it practically every day since I bought it...uh.... 4 years ago (?).
I have used other brands and don't like them as much, but I'm also not tryin' to start something.
To each his own, but I'd say it's worth it.
I have been OK with Dewalt so far but I use corded tools mostly and don't have other people using my tools.
A qualified "no."
Nothing against DeWalt; indeed, having an impact driver is the best tool move you can make. Where I have a problem is when you say '18v."
An 18v impact driver in no more powerful than a 9.6v driver. It will, however, run longer between charges. The impact 'power' comes from the clutch design, and has nothing to do with the battery.
So, I object to the 18v battery on grounds of weight. Now, the newer Li-ion batteries bring that weight penalty way down, and make the package more handy.
There are now a number of 'tiny' impact drivers out, that fit in a pocket and are getting great field reviews. These little wonders have Li-ion batteries as well. Depending on your uses, one of them might be perfect for you.
Also ... as the owner of a DeWalt impact .... I must point out that several other makes have many more user-friendly features. I'd look past the brand name on this one.
you really don't believe that do you??

I had a feeling that someone would dig out the spec sheets ....
Look at the complete line, as well as competing brands. The difference is in the clutch, and NOT the battery. Nor are the differences that great. I mean ... double the battery, only a 40% increase? The silliness of lugging a big battery around is really clear when you bring those little 'pocket rockets' into the mix.
Or, let's put it another way. Here are tasks I perform routinely, with no fuss, using the 9.6v DeWalt:
-Boring 1-1/8 holes in 4" of lumber;
-Using a 7/8" unibit on 1/8" steel;
-Driving 5/16" tapcons; and.
-Driving 1/4" lag bolts into pressure treated lumber.
I sure don't see any need for 'more power.' I think those spec sheets are put out so engineers have something to drool over (besides an old Playboy).
have 9.6, 12 and 18V on the job all at the same time doing the same job...
this way you get to see IRL performance....
the 18V thrashes the 9.6....
the 18V Bosch will take the lugnuts off of my Land Crusher...

Interesting to hear that.
Oddly enough, when FH reviewed impact drivers, the quthor, and his crew, came to the opposite conclusion: the extra battery weight was not worth it, and the performance difference was marginal.
Mind you, they didn't try changing tires. I might try that, if only I could find a 1/4" impact socket that was large enough for my lug nuts.
We're getting off point. The question was: should he buy an 18v DeW impact driver? I don't see anyone else addressing the specific question.
I say: Impact? Yes, absolutely, he'll quickly find it's one of his favorite tools, regardless of brand, model, or size.
18v? If they're Li-ion battteries, fine. If they're Ni-Cd, I don't see the advantage of the extra weight. If anything, impact drivers are going the opposite direction of drills, where smaller models are doing well.
DeWalt? Nope; there are other brands that are much nicer. I'm partial to the Makita - and I own a DeWalt. He can do much better than DeWalt.
Common battery advantage? Not really. He'll need different chargers anyway, with the changeover to Li-ion, and the advent of the smaller tools. As far as product lines are concerned, Makita seems to have the better tool assortment, while DeWalt has the 'fun stuff" (radio, vacuums, lights, etc) better covered.
I was after the common Ni-Cd battery to the tools I have.
I use a worm drive saw and pick up 16' boards so the wieght doesn't bother me.
I have less than 6000 hrs. to work yet and most of that won't be using battery tools.
Will I have to change Li-ion? I read they are not cold weather friendly.
It certainly looks like the change to Li-ion is only a matter of time.
As far as DeWalt is concerned, the Li0ion batteries have a slightly different shape, but they will work in existing tools. I am told that the new Li-ion chargers will be able to also charge the old batteries. However, old radios and lights will not be able to charge the Li-ion batteries.
A good news/ bad news thing
so is it as clear as mud now...

I'm pondering the same choice. I have a slew of 18 V DW already, need some more batts, and want the 18v impact.
I cooked a hammerdrill and Lowes has the deal going, 249 for drill and impact (old batts) and then another free batt. Good deal right? But the drill included is not a hammer drill, I need that for downspouts on masonry.
Lowes is not the only phaser-outer of old batts, it's all Dewalt resellers. They are pushing the Li-Ion to stay up with everyone else, they were just way late coming to the party, hence the new shape that fits the old tools.
You can get one Li-ion batt and new charger for 149.00, 2 old batts for 119.00 or a kit at 249.00 with the two tools and 3 batts.
Take yer pick.
All in all, I am probably gonna just get more old style batts, and go Makita for the Impact, and fix my hammer drill. When the new batts for DW come down, I'll make the switch for those tools, if the tools still perform OK.

That is what I saw 2 batteries for $119.
Everybody is raving about impact and I thought for another hundred.Trouble is it's another $160.
I have had the hammer drill for two years and think it does fine for holes up to 1/4". I got the hammer drill as a kit with the circular saw.
My roof buddy Dale had the 18v DW and it ran circles around my 14.4 Mak. But the weight is an issue, tho not one that would bother me.
I'd just as soon get the Mak. 18V Li-ion, slowly losing my faith in DW.
Oh, and I use a lug wrench for lug nuts. Every one trys to push battery tools into the realm of air or elec. and that is how they get destroyed early. If it comes equipped witha 1/2" drive anvil, then OK. If it has a 1/4" Hex anvil, guess what? That is what it was designed for. Sure I've beat and abused some of my tools in a pinch, but stepping up to ft lbs or inch lbs beyond design limits is just asking for a let down sooner or later.
Its the old " Oh Yeah? well MY tool can...."
Sure, once or twice it can, how about all day? Everyday.

I really don't get the weight thing. Compared to carrying 12' 4x4.
Drill for door knobs I use corded. Hinge and latch screws I use cordless.
Using corded drill today and guy asked me if it was new. I bought it in 1998.
The weight and cord thing is an issue if ya happen hang a LOT of gutters and downspouts. I drill for rivits w/the impact, it's faster than a drill, and can also sink the screws on fascia hangers. On a ladder all day, holding gutter or spout and tooled up, gets to ya, if one driver does the job, I'm on it.
Often many homes have no outdoor power, so corded tools are rarely able to get out of the truck.
The hammer drill is needed for mas. downspout straps.
Makita makes a nice rotohammer in 18V Li-ion, another vote for them in my caseSpheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I am 90% feet on the ground. No more shingles, I hired it done for my own house.
Gutters are subbed out on my projects but I replace alot of downspouts when the tenants get done bashing them.
Might change my habits if I go impact.
I'll add one more selling point for me, a belt clip/hook. DW hasn't got one. (AFAIK) And once you get used to one, you can't go back..at least I can't. I have a Bosch, an older Mak,a newer mak. and a Hitachi , all impacts, and that older Mak has no hook, I drop it all the time thinking I hooked it..LOL

Sounds pretty. Seriously thats about all I do also. I think framing guns should come with a hook by law, and the ones I get my hands on never do, for that matter the nicest thing about the finish pasloade is the hook, its perfect.
Speaking of hooks, anyone ever use these- Werner Tool Lasso (HD also has 'em, branded Husky)? Jim Blogett turned me on to 'em. They might look silly, but for me they're the shizzle-dog.

I find those great - especially with the c-clamp thing you can clamp to the rails of an extension ladder!
HD's got hte Mak 18 vl lion 3.0 amp drill/imp kit for 239.00. was going to buy the smaller 1.5 amp drill for 199.00 last week, but couldn't pass that up.
bought 2. now have 3 of the 1.5's and 4 of the 3.o's. ad one problem and HD quickly replaced that one. light, powerful, ergonomic... everyone that touches these tools loves them. one of the kits was a six piece. definetely get the saw and grinder, infinetly usefull.
was at HD today. DW has had big end run displays for lion batts. but not one single frickin lion batt in the store. only xrp, of which I've got 4 batts and they all SUCK!!!! only use those drills for hanging pictures and the occasional short useage project. now that I bought more maks, it's probably a goner.

Nothing like a good ur'n contest(;-)
I think he took you to task for the statement saying they all had the same power, just longer work time with higher voltage.
That said, I agree with you about not hanging on to more battery weight than I have to. I started out with a 12v DW, added a 12v Makita (sold it to a customer), added a 14.4 DW, then a $29 Firestorm 12v ( use it when building furn/cab on bench), added 10.8 and 12v Bosch. The latter are my go to ones. If I am doing lags or deck bolts I use the 14.4 and sometimes wish for an 18v.
I can afford to have the various sizes and like to match the tool to the job. Many can not. Believe if I was starting out buying this stuff now I would go Makita L/I. The Makitas I had were the Nimh and they just did not fit my hand as well as the others. The breed has improved as I see it.
My little 12v DW earned it's keep and hopefully I will find it and the matching drill if I ever clean up my basement. They may have been snatched out of one of the truck boxes.
