Have an opportunity to receive a Suburban from a client in partial payment – she remarried, and they have too many cars. She’s the original owner.
1995 GMC Suburban – 5.7 liter (350), 4-wheel drive (independent front suspension). Conversion with running boards, console, captain’s chairs, TV, tinted glass, seems to be every conceivable option. Class 3 hitch. Alloy wheels – good tread.
190,000 miles. Her mechanic is confident it will go 300,000; he wants it!
Bad factory paint – the white top coat is peeling; needs a repaint. Absolutely ZERO rust, however.
Anyone interested? I could likely deliver most places in the US.
Kelley Blue Book says $7100 for “price from a dealer”.
Something approaching that would be good.

I know Dinosaur needs new wheels. I don't know if he's interested in a Suburban, tho.
Interested? Nice southern car; no rust . . . I could bring it up.

...Nice southern car...How can you tell? Does it have a funny accent from the tailpipe?

The Sub is built on the same chassis as the Sierra 1500, hence it rides like and gets the same gas mileage as a big pickup...for what is essentially configured as a people-transporter. It's not really an SUV, it's a truck in a party dress. Duh.
When used as a work vehicle, Sub's have the problem of allowing sawdust and tools and 2x's to come right into the driver's area to say 'Howdy' when some jerko cuts ya off and ya gotta pile on the brakes. Of course up here, any non-4WD truck is a 50-percenter (it's useful about 50% of the year), and at 7 grand it does seem a bit pricey for a 13-year-old.
But if the US dollar drops another 50 cents Canadian, I might get interested just for shots-n-goggles....

Seems some guys have the idea that you are giving the customer seven grand credit for this set of wheels!I'm thinking you are sharp enough to be letting her have a credit of four grand and trying to mark it up enough to cover the cost of a nice trip delivering it.;)

I see one pedal, so it must be automatic. She got service records for that? count me interested, but I have to run it past the wife and see when I will be getting my money from that customer. Then we can negotiate and beat each other up. Meanwhile, if somebody else gets hot for it, go ahead.

I sold my 95 suburban 'bout 6 months ago.
Not "cherry" but pretty darn clean, & 120K on the clock.

White Bronco, was his vehicle of choice.
KBB "retail" ain't no where close to that.
and that's for "excellent" ...
whole new paint job would make for "fair" condition.
that year, those miles and that paint ... I'd bet $4K tops.

Hope you ain't knocking $7K off the final bill.

I thought it high as well. A guy I work with is looking for a Suburban, HO for the house we are working on has a 99 with 160K miles and I think he offered it to Dave(guy I work with) for $5500 or they could "talk".
Course this isnt a southern truck but it has been taken care of.
With gas approching $4 a gallon I think these things are going to be hard to move in the not to distant future.

I'm always in the market for a nice Sub ...
and am closer than ever before.
the box van is still down as we round up the money to spring for a new motor, and my mechanic has been busy as hell so I told him not to rush it ...
so I been working out of the Jeep Cherokee.
Jeep's paid off ... and I love it.
But got to thinking ... a nice big Sub would have way more room to work out of. Could even box the the back and make U shaped permanant shelves and work out of it on purpose most days.
Only downside ... where I park the Jeep. Right next to the wife's garage. So she has to pull down and around the Jeep to get into her garage ... the Sub might not fit that parking space. Jeep's alreay pushed over one sappling and goes up the hillside a bit to give her more room.
I looked at a nice low mileage 2001, loaded ... for $8K.
fair price .... but more than I could pull outta the wallet at this exact moment in time.

Ahh! You have each given me learned info!

Nice car tho - and seems to be consistant $ with the eight that are currently offered near my zip code.

That's exactly what Dave, my co-worker, wants to do.
Dave has three boys and he needs to be able to accommodate them with out having to go home and switch vehicles.
He was going to add one of these, just shorter. That way he could still take the box out and add the third seat if he needed it.

the box van is still down as we round up the money to spring for a new motor,
That's a Chevy or a GMC isn't it? FWIW, I just got a new 350 with 100,000 mile waranty installed for a little less than $4k. A rebuild was just $200 less. http://grantlogan.net/
But you all knew that. I detailed it extensively in my blog.
that's what I'm looking at.
it's a 2001 GMC Savana 3500, Vortec 350 with 90K on it.
when we called the go-to used motor guy he listed the problems before my bud could tell him. Said low mileage were like gold ... they all go bad right around 100K.
so ... gotta get the compression checked ... but even if a rebuild will do ... I'm thinking ... if they all go bad ... why rebuild now? Just bite the bullet and ride for 5 more years.
can get a Jasper that lists "discounted" at $2,300 for $1,800 thru my bud's bud ... and installed for $1K. Would have been $800 for a rebuilt, but gotta change all the accessories and such.
So I'm up to $3,300 ... plus the usual gaskets and fluids and such.
so ... I'm planning on $4k. What ever looks anywhere near worn will get replaced.
no sense having that 3 yr / 100K warrenty with old parts put back on.
do it once ... do it right.
plus, my bud give me the parts at his discount. Makes sense to work the connection while it's there.
that all said ... the motor guy called back and said first, check the compression, if that's good ... pull the cat canverter ... he just had one he though he had to rebuild ... turned out the original cat converter had clogged and fouled the whole system ... needed all new sensors and such, but he replaced them all and gave a full tune up and said it ran like a champ.

I got the same deal, except I went with the new from GM on my mechanic's advice which was $200 more than the Jasper and had a better warranty. http://grantlogan.net/
But you all knew that. I detailed it extensively in my blog.
my mechanic made the call today.
$2,400 for the Vortec , which includes the $100 core deposit.
that's for a long block.
said the install is safely under $1K.
I said I'm still going for replacing everything that ain't shiney and new.
so ... he's most sure we can do it all for less than $4k.
so that's the plan.
gonna go over his shop either Fri or Mon and place the order.
a guy that's helped him in the past was bummed as he's recently laid off and another motor swap just fell thru ... so now ... with this kids help ... he's planning on doing it all at his shop instead of dropping my van at the other place where it'll fit inside.
so that'll save me some bucks too.
Thanks for the tip ...

Yeah - glad that worked out. You don't owe me anything, but like I mentioned before, I'm nostalgic for Iron City. It used to be sold here ($3.99/case in '78) and I haven't had any in years. I'll gladly pay for it if you'll haul me a case of glass longnecks to Doud's.
Oh, BTW. I'm getting at least 2 mpg better mileage with the new engine and the other day when I stomped it going up an on ramp, the tires chirped when it shifted. Whew hew. http://grantlogan.net/
But you all knew that. I detailed it extensively in my blog.
glass?
U sure ... 'cause they got the cool new aluminum bottles.
I'll plan on bringing a case of both Iron City and I. C. Light to the Fest.

I'd be wary of Jasper.
Really don't want to stir things up, but, I would find another avenue. If I could.Remodeling Contractor just on the other side of the Glass City
I've heard bad about them, especially the tranny's.
but have a great experience with them for the wife's car years ago.
basically ... the mechanic, a Jasper guy, first installed a junkyard motor. I drove it home and looked at the numbers .. didn't start with J ... drove it back.
Called Jasper, they said nothing officially they could do, but gave me a call each time the guy contacted them, let me know when it left their warehouse, when it'd be delivered ... and their truck driver even called me a block from the guys garage so I could roll up behind their truck.
The mechanic was saying all along he didn't know when it'd be shipped and when he'd get it. Jasper guy helped me cut they the packaging to copy the new numbers off the block. Told the mechanic that one didn't end up in the car and he was in trouble.
So ... I'm a fan

I'll have them look into that to.
But I think the Vortec is way more expensive from GM.
But .... will defininitely will price them both apples to apples.
Thanks for the idea.
mighta started off comparing a new GM to a shop rebuilt, not "factory"? At this point we've looked at so many options I gotta see what I compared to what.

But I think the Vortec is way more expensive from GM.
And I think in normal circumstances that might be true. But new cars aren't moving real well right now, so they might be trying to get it where they can. As I said, I got a new Vortec installed for a little less than 4k and there were quite a few new peripheral parts involved.
Smokey (my mechanic) seemed kind of surprised at the minimal price difference between new and a Jasper rebuild. http://grantlogan.net/
But you all knew that. I detailed it extensively in my blog.
I agree with you that a "crate motor" is a better value - by far.
Just not trying to get the "breaktime feathers" all ruffled up.
Jasper is to internal cumbustion what Pulte is to fine homebuilding.

The Suburban is dang near 21 feet long and close enough to 7 feet wide as to make the difference unimportant. Anyone who hasn't parked/backed-up a full-sized pickup before will have to climb the same learning curve to handle a Suburban (I'm thinking if Cathy had to move it herself while you were out with the box truck).

Since you haven't done the work, the better choice would be to let her sell the vehicle before you start. That way, at least you know she has some cash.
I was thinking of asking you to build a rainbow bridge. I don't have any money, but I have some tools and some furniture in cherry condition, only 13 years old. I know the condition because I am the original owner. The finish is worn off of some of the items, but you could easily get that redone. If you sell the stuff for me or just keep it at my price, maybe we could talk! PS: The reason I have too many tools and furniture is that I remarried not too long ago. I don't want to pressure you, but my tool dealer and my furniture repair guy both think I have excellent stuff and they want it too. So hurry before I sell it to them!
