I’m building a house for a customer in southern Japan right now, and I’m just about to start the flooring. I’ve heard conflicting ideas of the proper underlay/method of installation of pine flooring, and since I was taught carpentry over here I thought I would check with you guys:
The first and second floors are framed normally and sheathed with 15mm (5/8″) plywood. The plywood is glued and nailed down. From there, the company has asked me to install the pine flooring directly to the plywood. I’ve heard of guys glueing the flooring down (which I am opposed to), and I’ve heard of using roofing paper as underlay before the flooring….
Any suggestions? I’d favour the underlay approach, but I’d like to confirm first….!?
I’ll be using a flooring stapler to install the pine T&G (17mm thick).
Thanks……

I like red rosin paper, I am sure you will hear other opinions.

Either way helps prevent sqeaks.
Glue is more helpful when wood movement is a suspected future problem, as with wide boards or areas with much seasonal fluctuation in humidity
