2005 Tool Guide – Dewalt Miter Saw

PaulGC | Posted in General Discussion on October 9, 2004 06:00am

I just got my latest issue of Fine Homebuilding and saw the cover for the 2005 Tool Guide issue. Do any of you guys have it yet and what can you tell me about the Dewalt miter saw that’s on the cover? I’d like to know as I’m seriously thinking of getting a 12″ miter saw. if Dewalt has a new one coming out then I’ll wait til then.

Thanks

Is the Bosch model you refer to a 12" or 10"?

      Thanks

snow here and who instead of what...

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming

            WOW!!!   What a Ride!

And snow most nights since the end of August...

            IMERC= Industrial Mercenary.

Ask him about his extension cords.

Ya, same here on the Dewalt.

But Bosch well probably be the replacement.

Not really sure about the Dewalt slider, I've heard this & that.  I have the 12" Dewalt cms and it has served me very well, I love it.  Will get a slider soon, probably a Makita because there's a Makita repair factory close by.

What exactly have you heard about the Dewalt 12" version? I've thought about getting it but have hesitated so far.

      1. JerBear | Oct 09, 2004 10:57pm | #10

I've actually used it and thought it to be quite nice,  very accurate and adjustable.  Some people complain that because of the over-under positioning of the slide rails there is lateral play after a while.  Also they don't like to reach around back to adjust the bevel, I do it on mine and it never bothered me. Some people say they have had it for a number of years and wouldn't trade it for anything....kind of the way I feel about my 12" cms.  It has as much to do with what religion you belong to, Dewalt, Bosch or whatever.  There are people who would never have anything to do with a tool just because it bears a certain label and they think everything that has that name on it is junk.  I go with what works.  Think of what our brethren had to work with only 50 years ago to make nice cuts, it's my opinion that we never had it so good when it comes to certain tools.

American Woodworker magazine said that the Dewalt 12" scms was the best over all bargain.  It was right up there with Makita and Bosch....the two saws that seem to be leading the pack at the moment.

The DW miter saw on the cover is the one I have, double bevel 12" non-slider. I'm a finish carpenter and it has been working non stop everyday for 2yrs? geez I can't remember whe I bought the thing. Best freakin saw I've ever used and it is still cutting like a dream, it will cut 6" material standing up against the fence, which has sped up so many large baseboard jobs its paid for itself time and time again. On the flat, it cuts 8", and there isn't the slop of the slider, which I've always found to wander a hair this way and that on the rails.

The belt drive gives the extra clearance below, and makes the saw a little quieter and smoother running than the direct drive saws. The only thing that I was unhappy with was the forward splash of sawdust when cutting. Because there is so much usable blade in front of the fence there is no getting around it, but I'm used to it now.

Thanks for the response however, why do you say that you've had it for 2 years now when it appears on the cover of the "2005 Tool Guide"? I assumed anything on the cover of the magazine would start to come out in 2005. If it is already out then why have it in the 2005 guide? just curious.

      1. gordsco | Oct 10, 2004 08:28am | #14

Why would you want a prototype? If it ain't broke why fix it? Never take a new camera on vacation.....if its improved for 2005 its internal...

Look at them tall fences.....they slide out of the way or you can remove them

Flip up the guard hold it with your thumb and operate the trigger in one motion....  Ain't she sweet?
