Hi,
i’m about to start framing my wrap-around porch…&…i was wondering … if there is any way i can get away with using 2X10 PT for my decking boards?….
i know / i know … most people say ” dont use anything wider than 6″ …….but i sure like the appearance of the wide boards.
i was thinking, turn them all bark side up… screw them w/ 9X3.5 screws—3 per joist…and hope for the best…
Has any one used this wide of a PT board and got away with it?
thanks…paul

Paul,
That could be overkill. 5/4 X 6 is the norm for PT.

Pt is normally pretty wet, it may undergo a bit of shrinking, resuling in gaps between the boards.
They do have dred PT lumber, might want to take a gander at that.
Personally, I wouldn't want to sit on it. Or be barefoot on it. Or lick it.

As mongo implied, the PT will have tons of splinters, dry out and crack and also cup and look like S**t. Pt in general is terrible decking, talk to a local lumberyard and see what else is available.
Terrible idea and bad choice of lumber. Especially for your climate.
But if you have to do it, dry them first and kerf the backsides. Then use PL Premium to glue them down along with plenty of deck screws. Plan to oil it every year too.

Hi,
Could you explain what kerfing is?....&....what it will accomplish?
is it small rips parrallel down the boards?
thanks ... paul
yes it is. Like the dado reliefs you see in the back of flooring. The relief cuts allow for some movement within the board without letting it move totally so much and keeps it from cupping as much.abouth a third of th e depth and about every inch or so

can i just rip it on a table saw, every 1" to 1 1/4" or so...using just a normal ripping blade? approx. 1/8" wide rips

my deck is rough sawn DFir 2x10s on 4.5 ft centers. Not PT.
been there 30 years, only one rot spot replaced where there was sapwood.
Oh, forgot, you cant soak stuff in penta anymore.
But if you could get penta???
Isn't it inconvenient sometimes when carrying the groceries in, to step across all those three and a half foot gaps in the decking?
