I know this a little off topic, but I’m trying to scan some old (to me) slides from 69 and I don’t know which way is which?
One side has the printing Kodachrome transparency, this side toward screen, while the other side has nothing. So if I hold it up to the light, am I seeing the correct orientation if I’m facing the Kodachrome side or is the other side.
There aren’t any distinguishing features in most of these pictures to tell the difference.
For those wondering, these were taken by my uncle. Somewhere in eye corp. His AO was FB Helen — FB Rakkasan areas.
Thanks in advance

Look for a US flag on a shoulder patch.

Malo,
I've been looking, and these guys are incognito. Nothing on their uniforms, not even names, no patches; not even any of the choppers (so far) have any markings or insignias, whatsoever.
The only thing I've found so far was a Fender insignia on an amplifier, but that wasn't one of the Kodachrome slides.
The kodachrome side is correct, I blew it up and see the pilot.

Thanks.
All slides are right reading with the emulsion side down (or away from you). If the slide is marked "this side toward screen", that is the emulsion side. Otherwise, generally any printing (such as number, or film type) will be on the base side (which faces you). If all that fails, the emulsion side is generally duller, and if you reflect light off of it, you will often see a "bas relief" effect... HTH

Just so I'm clear on this, is reading it the same thing as me looking at it or are you talking about how a projetor would see it.
I do know that if I hold it up and look at it, that is the exact image that shows up on my computer screen. So if looking at it with the side that doesn't have "this side toward screen" on it, that is the actual orientation.
Thanks.
Right, no matter how you phrase it, the emulsion side faces away from you when viewing it. As far as scanning it goes that depends on the scanner. I'd try one first, and when you know how your particular scanner works orient the rest the same way. Hope this is clear enough...if not feel free to shoot me a PM.

I think I've got it know. Thanks Paul
Another way to identify the emulsion side (sometimes slide mounts are not marked): When looking at the emulsion side in a glancing light you can see the outlines of the image, and it will be slightly matte looking. The non-emulsion side will be glossy and smooth.
Just wondering if it there was a copilot or did they often fly without one?
I think that pic has the RT seat empty.View Image
if you can find a pic that shows the main rotor, they spin CCW viewed from the top down.
or one with the sliders closed, the fueling cap is on the right side of the AC
I opened in Irfanview and zoomed way in, looking for rotor pitch. Then I caught what looks like pilot in left seat, and darker void in right. In the first pic.View Image
Pilot in Command or AC commander or whatever they call them is on the right side of the AC for the helicopters that I know of. Bigger instr panel and the start switch is on the collective (left hand) of the right seat.
I took a quick look but I couldn't see any of the rotor baldes. I'll have to think a bit on the stab bar at the top of the mast to see if I can remember any diferences. I don't think there is.
wait.... tail rotor is on the left side of the AC on those Hueys. Later models that the Marines use ( -n or the civ 212) have it on the right. but alas, there's no TR in the pictures in the OP

pull the slide out of the holder and read the identifier on the edge of the slide...
reads reagular...
