Hi guys, I’ve been looking for an answer to this, and after much Googling and not finding an answer I thought I should ask people with the experience and knowledge.
I’m designing log cabins and I’m looking to put 4′-5′ overhangs on them. From the research I’ve done I should be fine with TGIs if the over hang is 1/3 or less than the span, i.e. 15′ span/5′ overhang. However, I’m worried about uplift. I will with screw the TGIs down or use SST brackets.
Anyone have any insight on this?
Thanks!

5 ft will be ton of uplift. can you have a truss company run it for you?
Once you exceed 4’ cantilever (basically same thing as 4’ overhang) special design criteria needs to be met. Typically, this requires the use of some LVL’s. Your supplier should be able to get you an engineered plan in hand from the manufacturer. For uplift you may need to install continuous steel strapping to hold down the rafters, but it all depends upon your local code authority as to how much and how that needs to be handled.
