6×10 trailer setup

mmoogie | Posted in Tools for Home Building on August 24, 2009 05:36am

I picked up a 6×10 trailer Sunday…impulse buy off the side of the road. Price was right. I’ve been considering moving to a trailer setup for a while. I was thinking I was going to go bigger than 6×10, but now this is what I’ve got.

Anyone got any good advice on setting up a trailer this size for general remodeling? Pictures would be really great if anyone has any.

Steve

yes, enclosed. swing doors on the back and a side door. I've been working out of a picku with a bedslide, but find it increasingly unworkable.

Steve, My trailer is a 6x10. Did you see my thread about it?

Hi Brian,No, I missed it. Did a quick search of the archives, but most were pictures of vans or bigger trailers. Got a link?Edited to say I think I found it. Was this one of the posts from it ;-)>>I've worked out of a van, pickup truck, truck with cap, out of a trailer, etc. I'm back to a van and won't go back to truck or truck and trailer.<<Steve

Now that you dug that up... I get to eat my words. Now I use a van and a trailer (some of the time). This is the thread on my trailer (starts with the brackets):123081.1 You may have to manually put that # in.

I found it. Question: What do you use to anchor the cargo rails to the box frame? The insides of my trailer are sheathed in luan with a single 1x rail screwed through it to the steel verticals. Seems a little flimsy. Also don't see big stuff in there...tablesaw, chop saw stand, long festo rail, sawhorses, etc. Is that stuff in the van? Got my eye on that little ford electric van they'll be releasing next year...Steve

I screwed spacer blocks to the steel frame buy pre drilling pilots into the steel and then using 1-1/2" GRK cabinet screws. Then the cargo rails were screwed to the spacer blocks. In this pic you can see a gun case (on the floor left side) that has track saw rail sections in it. The table saw is the little DW 745 on the right (gray square top) the Rousseau set up is against the front wall. Chop saw and stand (right rear). There are two orange steel saw horses (Left rear) and two plastic fold up (hidden by the Rousseau).

Ah, now I see them. I've been mulling over getting that little dewalt saw. My 12-year-old 744 sounds like it's losing its bearings...starting to squeal a bit. Since I've got the festo and the 9' rail, I rarely break down sheet goods on the saw anymore and I think the 745 would handle most everything else. The chop saw stand is probably going to be the single most awkward piece to try and find a home for. How do you get things out past the wire racks, just lifting them up over? Is there a clearance problem with anything doing that?I've been thinking of trying to go modular...maybe a large bins setup.I'm surprised at how roomy your trailer looks inside. Steve

Most things lift over the wire racks, but the racking lifts out of the way as easily as opening a door or drawer too. It is pretty roomy with my normal tooling... full remodel tooling adds framing guns, roofing gun, big honking hammer drills, etc. (I try to stay away from that stuff) ;o)Did you see the way my shelving can be removed without tools... and the slat wall double rails?Office work monday here--blech!

Ya, that's sounds about right. Nothing major wrong outside of small dents and scratch here and there, maybe touch of rust? Single axle?

Single axle, 2004... just a Pace, not a Featherlite or anything great. Does have the side door and overhead light and switch.

I gotta 10 ft too but we aint talkin bout what I got in it . Its high. I had a stupid moment .

I looked so hard for a good used trailer and could not find one . When I found this one I said Im just gonna do it , I needed it and I paid the fiddler. Finding one is the biggy.

And just like that, Poof! The 6x10 is gone. I went to the local trailer guy yesterday and saw that what I have brand new is only 500 dollars more, plus I could order it with brakes for only 180 dollar upcharge. And I checked out the 6x12's and 7x14's while there. Sure do like the inside of that 7x14.When I went to pick up the trailer and pay the guy on Sunday, he mentioned that another guy (that I know) had called and asked to buy it after the seller had made the verbal commitment to me. He even offered a couple hundred more than what I was going to pay, but the seller honored his word to me, having never met me or knowing who I was. Gotta love rural America. So I called the other guy up and said I would sell it to him for what I paid. He came over this morning and bought it.Now I've got a line on a used 7x14 for 3100 and a used 6x12 already rigged up with shelves for 2100. Gonna go looking at 'em today.Steve

The 6x12 is single axle w/no brakes, the 7x14 is tandem w/brakes.

Here is my 12' Wells Cargo...

            View Image

I LOVED working out of a trailer. Most of my work was new single family homes and big remodels. I would just leave the trailer onsite, and everything we needed was always there.

I sold it about a month ago for $2,000. (see my "closed up shop" thread) 119057.1

If I ever go back into biz (very slim chance) A trailer will be my first purchase.

Probably get a 16' next time.

Yes, mine was a 6x12 Wells Cargo, dual axle, elec. brakes, rear barn doors, and a curb side door. Also had a ladder rack on top.

I've got a 6x12 v nose single axle... It is set up well, but my next one will definitely be a 7x14 dual axle with brakes, and racks on top.I'll get some picks of mine sometime though, it works well for me.

Steve, I don't have a trailor, but will relay what I have heard at another web site.

            1 don't buy single axle

            2 but brakes!

Other than that everyone loves them.

I've got a 5x10 WellsCargo with side door and ramp. Plated the inside with 3/4 plywood and built a sheet goods rack that'll hold about 8-9" of 4x8 goods.Have been through many changes and tweaks thru the years, but It's about as optimized as it can get for a one-man remodel/handyman shop.Picked up a 7x10 box Uhaul truck based on a Toyota dually chassi last year and I'm gonna get around to rigging that up as my main work truck. Now, I get maybe 8-10mpg towing the trailer with my truck - Dodge 5.9 V8, I figure maybe I'll get 13-16 mpg with this little V6 box truck.Spend $4-5K in gas per year, maybe save $2K a year on gas....Here's a few pics of it. Table saw is the Bosch, stored vertically on it's wheeled stand against the wall, miter saw is a Bosch 10" cordless hangs from the wall, miter stand is the Dewalt - hangs from the sheet goods rack as well.JT

3/4 ply on the walls is to give better purchase for hanging stuff anywhere?

          28. JulianTracy | Aug 25, 2009 09:27pm | #33

The 3/4" is screwed into the steel frame work. Then, all my shelves and racks are screwed into the 3/4 with heavy coarse screws.Plus, it allows me to mount hooks and loops & tie downs wherever I need them to be.JT

            >>I found it for $1250.<<Wow! Now I feel like a sucker for paying 2K!. It's a Haulmark DLX. Might as well be brand new for all the use it's seen. It was mostly owned by a guy who used it for his model airplanes. The next owner bought it then really never used it.Steve

Sounds like mine was used and abused more than yours though. Still beats new retail pricing.

"Sounds like mine was used and abused more than yours though. Still beats new retail pricing."

Im just gonna tell it .

I bought one at public auction. Framer trailer . He fell off the house and has brain damage. Had a bent axle . I drug it home and ruined te tires. Didnt ret home . 10 miles from home I called a wrecker . Had it hauled to atrailer place that builds them here in town. Lucky we had one .

One day at auction and bring it home .

            900 bucks on the block.

Seems like it was 500 bucks for an axle, two used spoke wheels and new tires.

Ended up with near 1500 in it and it aint pretty. Been drug through the brush and under trees er somthin. Not somthin I would want my name hangin on it . Didnt need that so thats ok. Does every thing a new one would have done and mebbe they wont steal it . Im gonna buy a bigger trailer after all that .

What is a good price? The local Depot has a few 6X10 trailers in front for 4 grand (Canadian) . That is about 3700 US dollars.  I was considering a trailer a while back but made a rollout for my truck instead.

    Have a good day

Hi Cliffy,Having seen what Brian paid for his, now I'm embarrased that I got taken! Mine was 2K. It's 2004, but is almost new condition. I called and told the guy I would take it, and bring him a check the next day. In the meantime, another local guy offered him 2200 for it, but he honored his verbal over the phone agreement with me. Gotta love small town america.I don't even really know hwat they are worth new now. I wasn't seriously looking yet. I think they were in the neighborhood of 3500 around here, but started looking online and they are out there for closer to 3K I think. And now I see a 6x12 with shelves already in it on my local craigslist for 2100.I've been using the rollout for about 6 years now. It sure beats a cap and no rollout, but It's just too crowded in the truck anymore.Steve
