8×10 shed

oldblue | Posted in General Discussion on February 10, 2006 01:52am

Need to move a 8×10 wood shed 30 feet or so, I was going to use 4″ or 6″ pvc pipe to try to roll the the shed. Any other ideas? Thanks

I have an 8x12 shed that I moved about 50 feet. I had a guy with a mobile crane drop by and do it. He slung it at each end, connected a spreader bar at the top, and swung it over to the new spot. Minimum charge, $125.

PVC pipe sounds fine--depending on how heavy the shed. Cast iron pipe would work too. I had the brilliant idea when we cast a concrete step and couldn't move it and didn't have rollers to use the 2X2 stakes we had from pouring the sidewalk--I was suprised at how well they worked. Even skidding your shed across plywood might work. If you live up north, skid it in the snow or run a hose and make a path of ice!

What are you rolling it on? If it's dirt or someing soft, use a skid instead of a roller. We moved a new shed about 12' between two concrete pads (origional was on an easement) by using some 2"sch40 pipe chopped into lengths, about 5 per side. A high-lift jack works well for raising it, and be sure to cross brace any openings like doorways. The one we moved was quite heavy, with a concrete tile roof and hardiplank siding. We used two come-alongs to pull and position it.

I think youve got it if the pipe is shrdule 40 or 80.

    Most importantly

If you roll it, make sure you can stop it slowly. Those quick stops into the neighbor's truck suck!

I don't know if PVC would be stout enough. Metal pipe wpuld definatley be fine. Lay down plywood and it will be a pretty smooth move.

I moved a 12x16 barn on 4 3" PVC pipes and it worked like a charm.  does your shed have skids (4x4) or are the joists directly on the ground?  if it has skids, the pipes work e-z.  Just get a 2x4 and a couple of scraps and lever up the front edge and have a partner shove the pipe about half way back... put the next pipe a foot from the front , lower the lever and start pushing.  if you have to move it sideways, you can put down some 2x and use the same lever to "shimmy" it.  I've moved about 80 of these things and it works out fine...just not downhill...:)knowledge without experience is just information.... Thanks for all the good ideas. We are supposed to get a foot of snow Sat. night. so maybe I'll make up some skis for it and give it a push with the Kubota.
