My wife and I are in the preconstruction phase of our house and we’re trying to finalize our exterior doors and windows and get them ordered so we won’t be waiting months to get the house blacked in. Our door and window supplier says once we place the order we’re looking around 20 weeks before we will have them on the job. Our framer is starting mid April ‘22 so I’m hoping all our doors and windows will be here by the time he starts framing if we place our order in the next couple of weeks. With that being said, we’re using 9’ ceilings and are struggling with making the decision of using a standard 80” door or jumping up to 84”. I’m confident an 84” height will be more aesthetically pleasing and in doing so will bring the windows up an additional 4” and will look much better on the inside of the house by not having as much of a gap between the ceiling and the top of the window. If we go with the 84” door height on the exterior should we also go with 84” interior doors or just the standard 80”? My wife says no but I like symmetry and my gut feeling says to make the interior match the exterior. If there’s a big price difference to go up to 84” then we will most likely go with 80” but any advice, thoughts, past experiences would be helpful in making this decision! Thanks!

I would go 84", what did you end up doing? I am currently designing my house, and I was leaning towards 8' doors, but with only 9' ceilings it seems that it may not be a good idea. How did 84" turn out? it may be a happy medium
I'd think about 80" with transom windows.
Go for the 84" doors both inside and out for that sweet symmetry! It'll make the house look more put together, especially with those high ceilings. As for the price diff, if it's not a huge diff, I say go for it. But if it's gonna break the bank, 80" ain't bad. Think about what'll make you happier every time you walk through those doors!
You aren’t his wife.
