There is a metal fabricator on my site doing a welded stainless tube handrail. He is grinding his welds with a narrow belt sander built on what looks like a grinder body.
It almost looks like a sawzall belt sander. I asked him what make it was, but all he could tell me that it was German made and expensive.
Anyone seen anything like this and know where it comes from?

Makita makes a weird looking sander similar to that. The belt sticks out from the body with a roller at the end. I've seen little pneumatic ones in machine shops, maybe aircraft supply catalogs too. Joe H
I know they use something for deburring parts that might also be what y9ou saw, where to get don't know.

I think I 've seen one like that in the Grizzly catalouge too - the metalworkers one.
Last week I bought a Bosch belt sander that looks something like a 4" grinder with a small belt sander attachment (1.5" wide, I think). Haven't had a chance to try it out yet. This is most likely not what you are talking about, but a picture of one is at:

A few weeks ago, at a bankruptcy auction of a small metalworking shop, I purchased a small belt sander that is more likely similar to what you saw, it was a Belton sander. A new one in the U.S. will set you back around $400-$450. The best picture I found was at a UK site at:

They also make pneumatic ones, the following is from a search at MSC supply and is in .pdf format. Don't know if it will come up, but try it (it's at the bottom of the page):

If you really want to go cheap, you can try the attachment for a grinder at Harbor Freight:

Milwaukee also makes one.
Friend who builds brazed steel bicycle frames uses a pneumatic belt sander, has a very narrow belt to fit in tight areas on the frame for finishing after brazing. I beleive the tool is called a bandfile.
Ken Hill
Bandfile is the name of this tool. I saw the fellow using Klingspor belts, which made me think to search their site. Found some bandfiles there.
Thanks,
