I have had so many opinions on this, I would like to know just what is the right one. How far can 2″x10″ floor joists 16″ on center be extended out to support a on-bearing2″x4″ by about 12′ one story wall which will be mainly window area. I want to go at least 3′ but up to 4′ would be the best. Please can someone help me with this problem. Thanks!

If your concerned extend your floor joists out the four feet and double them up. three foot back for every foot out.
*thanks Jim for the advise, I think that's what I may do, RWC
*Or go out 16' and you only have to go back 12';-)Hire an engineer!Jerry
*This question about how far you can cantilever floor joists comes up A LOT here at Breaktime. I think you have to look at the entire bump out as a system, including the sheer strength of the side walls. But cantalevering 2x10s 4 feet raises my eyebrow. Go down to the lumberyard and weigh a few framing members and multiply that weight times the material list for your walls. Call a glass company and ask what glass weighs. Don't forget siding, drywall, and that bookcase someone will build under the window someday. What about when aunt Tilly comes over for the Christmas party? You'll have a significant load on those joists, even if they don't support a roof.Jerry's right, better to ask an engineer. There's a lot more to it than "rules of thumb".
*I agree - but don't forget that the weight on the cantilever end is good - it reduces the bending moment on the floor joists at the main span and decreases their deflection.Jeff
