I recieved a call from a previous customer they asked me if I could convert this cave into a wine cellar. It was in an old house ,built
around 1910.You had to go down a small flight of stair from the basement. It had a
dirt floor ,that was slightly muddy.
Please bare with me ,I am learning to post pictures.
If you to want to learn how to post pictures, this is a model thread. Not cause of me but because of the great guys around here.

How do you size these things right?
I noticed your pic was only 13kb
Many posters here find Irfanview easy to use. Below is a collection of different posts with info regarding the download for your viewing.

If you have Windows XP, you can right-click on a picture and choose "Resize pictures". You then have a choice of the picture size. It will save automatically in the same folder with the size added to the name.
A 1.65mb pic resized to medium becomes 101kb. Troy Sprout

Thanks for the tip
hmmmm, do I have a different window xp?
If I rightclick I do not see: resize
Where do you see it?
You have to have the Windowx XP Image Resizer Powertoy installed to have "Resize Pictures" in your right-click menu... Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
Third line down under "Print"... "Resize Pictures"Troy Sprout

hello Trout
I tried "Print" - there is no resizing; only a photowizard opens up but does not show how to resize. Any suggestions?
Maybe give me the "whole shebang"
My XP came with the IBM... I don't know if it's anything special/different than any home version.
Try This:
Open (dbl click) the pic from the folder
Place cursor on picture
RIGHT click
Move cursor over menu to third choice down... "Resize Pictures"
A window opens titled "Resize Windows"
Play with the choices til one works for ya.
Edited to say that "Trout" was used up back in first grade. Been getting worse since then.

Holy cow, It's always amazing to see tornado shots like that. One came by here about 20 miles away 20 years or so back.
Wiped out a large area. Houses sitting on top of houses, large trees looking like broken matchsticks with no limbs, all leaning the same way.

Now I need to figure out how to make the pictures load without clicking on them.
Do you mean inserting them? So that the actual picture displays in the message instead of just the attachment at the bottom?
There are different ways to do this, but I think the most popular is:
Create your message and attach the picture. Post the message. view the message and bring up the attachment. right-click (right mouse button) on the picture, choose "copy". Then hit 'back' to go back to the message. Click on "edit". Choose where you want to insert the pic and right-click "paste". Viola!
In this case I brought up your pic and copy-pasted it.

you might want to change the settings on your camera to eliminate the date/time stamp.. you know when you did the projuect .. so unless you are establishing an evidentiary trail.. the date / time detracts from the pic
as to pasting pics..
john t8 described it to a tee..
attach the photo in your BT post, and POST the post
then go back to your post, click on the attachment
when you can see your pic , right click and select COPY from the menu
then hit your back button
next , go to the bottom of your post and select EDIT, go to the point in your text where you want to insert the pic and go up to the top of your screen for the EDIT tools, select PASTE.
next select APPLY and you should be done..

NIce project-nice execution of plan. Do you get a lot of interesting projects like this? Must of been some head scratching involved here.
Greg In snowy connecticut
Thanks Gzajac
In answer to your question do I do a lot of interesting projects like this.Never did anything like that one. That took an accumulation of everything I think I have learned to date.I have done several projects for this customer. He bought an old farm house, and they did a total remodel and renovation.I was remodeling a whole house the next town over.He saw my trailer with phone number .He called me and asked me to look at his house,he had a contractor who was not showing up.So he asked me if I would be willing to take on the project. He showed me all he wanted done and I got to admit it was a lot.Reside the whole house with hardie plank with 3" exposure,Add several new windows, doors a covered porch that spanned to the garage, total kitchen renovation, ripping out walls to turn 3 rooms into 1 family rm.Adding on a bath room .Turns out the day I was to start he brought the other contractor in (who had previously done a lot of work on other houses for him.The customer tells us he would like us to work together, the other guy says I don't know about this,I said I don't know about this either.
I mostly worked alone ,he had 1 sometimes 2 other guys help him.Turned out ok in my opinion ,I have worked with a lot of different people, and I knew this would have been a real challenge to bring this job in in a reasonable time frame.Maybe I should have passed on it.I felt as carpenters we really complimented each other.I respected his ideas and abilities though we were diametrically opposed in our political beliefs,to the point he announced one day that one of us would not be left on this job.I guess I am going to miss him;)Actually there was so much to do we stayed out of each others way. Also I was willing to take suggestions and advice from him and to tackle things he didn't want to .Though one of his jobs was one I really did not want to do.He ripped all the Hardie plank for this whole house. It turned out great ,I have mostly 35mm Photos of that job .Though I have worked for the guy on several projects since I got my digital camera. He also had me build a house for his hot tub I call it a cabana(I think that's right).
He called me another time said he wanted to be able to park his John Deer in his old barn .Had to resize the opening ,also since the old barn post were siting on concrete pads and were shifting ,I went in and had to dig all the post and pour 4' concrete footings under them ,he also wanted me to move some of the post so he could drive his tractor in to the rear of the barn.Reason I mention this is it is totally different from my Wine cellar project.Another project he had me do was convert half of the upstairs of 1 of his barns into an exercise room.
Other projects I have done in the last few years .A nursing home maintenance guy called me ,he heard I repaired dry wall long story but parts of the building settled 3+ inches due to a drainage culvert under the building.Doors would not close ,drywall was cracked ,suspended ceilings were coming apart, floors had to be fixed. The hired some mud jackers before me ,I don't know what turnip truck they fell off of .They were horible.I ended up redoing about 40 rooms, and bath rooms replacing doors ,painting everything. They also asked me to replace about 50 windows that were about 54"x81" each in brick openings .They had me redo the Alzheimer unit and Actually take out some rooms at the other end off the nursing home to make a great room for the new mens Alzheimer unit, which they asked me to do.I did hire a a couple of people to help me on this one cause at the same time my bid was accepted to remodel the Jefferson county court house district court room ,jury room ,and because of federal funding we had to convert the old bathrooms into handi cap accesible.the walls in the bath were 20' high.Made 2 baths .I had to be for the judges chamber the other for the jury walls had to be insulated.Had to put bullet proof plywood behind the judges desk ,All new suspended ceilings,20' high,painting.Etc.Had to get bonded for that one.Catholic church saw the work I did asked me to bid on redoing the inside of the 100 year old church, they don't have the money at this time. This past year an old customer had a big house fire.I was on that one From January till September ,ended up being a whole house remodel.Got slow around here a couple of years ago.I saw an add in the paper.
Someone needed a framer to do work on an old barn in Colorado about 10 hours from here. The guy buys and sells old barns in Ohio and Indiana area mostly,he dismantles old barns and resells them all over the country. He had just done a project for a guy converting an old barn into an office building office building in Palmer Colorado,1 million and a half job, real fine
see
http://www.allbusiness.com/periodicals/article/845998-1.html Jim Fitzgerald, who owns Coldwater Media, a video production company in Palmer Lake, learned about Andre when he saw a news story about him tearing down a barn in Eastern Colorado during the '90s. Fitzgerald put the clip away but called Andre several years later when Fitzgerald wanted to build what he calls The Office Barn in Palmer Lake, and then again when he wanted to build a traditional barn on property where he lives nearby. The one on Fitzgeralds property is the one I got to work on.
There was on the original barn a lean too when Ken Andre dismantled the barn the lean too was not worth saving, with the Colorado wind and snow loads the Architects and engineers beefed up the leant.Ken Andre is a very sharp guy, very honest ,very conscientious, does most of the Barn work alone. One of the purloins in the barn he put up was a 70' 8x8.But at least at that time Ken did not do any conventional framing so he hired me to build the Lean too about 42'x24.Nothin to fancy. Then because of the Colorado Codes the rejected the old rafters (which were black ash old growth stuff that they ended up milling for the other barn for interior doors and trim and cabinets, real nice stuff.)He special ordered from a mill some doug fir 4x6's to go 2' on centers. Each one had to be cut to fit the old beams that were very iregular. Then we framed in several window openings.Really cool project.I also worked on a School in Barrow Alaska (its in the Arctic circle)one of the largest wooden schools in the world.Built on 12"x12"doug fir pilings ,buried 26',greased and wrapped 3 time with plastic. in the ground ,the whole school was basically built on stilts you can stand up walking under it.Exteior walls were 2X12 12" on center 18' tall in spots. The TGI's in the Gymnasium were 4' tall.Nothing conventional about that project.I started out in Massachusetts as a lad. When I started the carpenters did everything.,When I first came to Nebraska I ran into trades people who specialized in what the did.I worked with some finish carpenters ,some framers ,some concrete guys ,it was very humbling for me,but I learned a lot from a lot of people.I worked all over the country, which I would not trade for anything.Every area does things different.I worked in Anchorage for a while Framing Apartment Building ,8 plexes, custom homes.Anchorage has had the 2nd largest earthquake in the world.Very strict codes. They even have a building inspector go on the roof to make sure you followed the nailing schedule.
I worked for a paint crew painting old barns in Ohio, and for a Drywall finishing crew in Ohio.
I am thankfully for the many tradesmen I have run into and continue to run into I have volumes of Carpentry books and how to books,Mags like fine homebuilding, JLC and now this forum which has been a great resource to me.
Well I am glad you asked.
Ask me what time it is and I will tell you how to build a watch.

I would call that a conflict of interest. Two Amishmen working, each off the fork platform of a Lull, with probably Amishmen at the controls.
No Amishmen
One of the guys is me The other guy is Ken Andre. No one in the Lul .We were the only two on the job.Ken did most of the frame alone.I helped run the glue lam at the peak and the rafters and look outs.Other things on the framing .I was out of state ,It was winter in Colorado.
Ken brought in some local guys after the frame was done ,and I went home.So i did not get to work on the finish of this one .I was gone from home long enough. All the work being done in the inclosed picture, intitled 70'purlin here was and is being done by Ken Andre solo.
He hired me to do some conventional framing on a lean too added on to the barn.Edited 2/13/2006 10:26 pm ET by prosecho Edited 2/13/2006 10:29 pm ET by prosecho

prosecho... was it a tornadoe shelter to begin with ?
did the fireplace in the back once vent to daylight ?
nice piece of workMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Thanks Mike
We don't know for sure but your probably right about it being a Tornado shelter.I did a lot of work previously on the house ,all the outside walls were filled in each stud space with bricks,we did some adding on and installed a few new windows. We guess the bricks were to protect them from flying debris.Funny thing about the fireplace it did not have a hole in it.It does not appear to have ever been used. But if you notice the picture above the fireplace thing, there is a vent ,it goes into the crawlspace under that section of the house.I kept it ,we also used it to snake a wire into the wine cellar so we could add a couple of outlets.I put a screen over it .It is behind the wine rack but it still lets in air.
Prosecho,Is that a bottle of Far Niente I see in the background?
-Lou
Thanks dieselYour right ,it was awesome ,I love a chalange.I had never built a wine cellar before so I went through my old issues of Fine HomeBuilding and got some ideas.Mostly technical imfo.It was a design on the fly .
Hey Prosecho. I'm curious as to what you did with the muddy floor? Hard to see from the pics but it looks like there is a wood floor in place. Did you install a sump pump? The cellar looks really nice.
It was muddy ,I put down some sand about 4 inches, then I covered it with 2 mill plastic doubled up ,then I build a deck above it using cca with cedar 5/4 decking.
I actually put a sump in the upper basement.Even though Nebraska is in a drought i guess there upper basement was always leaking though cracks in the floor .I dug a hole and put a sump were the majority of the water came up ,on a hunch,we put a pit in that did fill up with water.Funny thing during the tornado the power went out ,the was 5" of rain in one hour ,the basement got wet ,but the wine cellar stayed dry. They say a little humidity is good for the corks, also the homeowner moved his cigar humidor down there and he is very happy that he doesn't need to add water to his humidor anymore.,says his cigars are perfect. Also being mostly under ground it stays about 56 degrees in there. After that 5" rain from the Tornado we added an inverter to the sump. The customer has golf carts to pull batteries from.Rick Sheehan

I felt like this was some kind of test in a way.I started out as a painter, had to fix stuff before you could paint it.So I learned to fix drywall ,sidding, etc. This project tested me for all I was worth. After the deck I built the long walls. Then I capped them with 2x8's cedar.Had to scribe the caps to fit againsts the iregular brick.

That is funnyI was just looking at some pictures .I tore off my old back porch 8 years ago,it had a bulkhead door in it to go into the basement. It was a mess .I got some 2x12's at an Auction so I designed a room around them,16'x16'.I put in a pressure treated foundation.I decided around thansgiving I was not going back to work till I finished my room.I finished it right before Christmass.I added some new speakers and a wood stove .My daughter says" Is this your favorite room in the house?" I said yes.She said why?I said cause I built it,I am always buiding things for others which I love to do.But I get to enjoy this room when ever I want to.I am going to post some pictures of my roomIf you notice the old coffee sign and the utopia sign
