Is the AFUE rating for boilers and the EF rating for water heaters the only way to compare their efficiency? I am trying to compare a munchkin boiler (92AFUE) with a Polaris water heater (.86EF.) . I understand that the EF. of .86 is comparable to 86 AFUE, but the Polaris claims to have a 94% thermal efficiency. Does “thermal efficiency” really mean anything?
