Same house I put a SS copper roof on — the mason asked me to flash this unit.
It rises out of the garage roof adjacent to the gable end of the main house.
I made a bottom pan that ended on the house wall and soldered everything together. Made all the steps for the one side , leaving them tacked in place for the builders roofing crew.
The trial fit and soldering pictures take up this post.

Guess I should show the long range picture too so you can get the idea of the placement too.
More pan pics.
Back half cricket to be made up and soldered tomorrow. Helped the masons tear down all morning.

Little dandruff on the old roof?
Nice, Walter!
Not today - it got up to 36 degrees.
That last picture was taken on 12 / 27
Thanks
Your soldering is much prettier than mine there Walter. I thought about paste flux, but still need Ruby to dip the irons..so I opted to skip it.
Looking good.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Just slather on some Laco Flux same as you would with Ruby.
I always pretty them up for the camera !!
The flux doesn't have anything to do with how the soldering looks. :+}http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
But, but,,,his isn't all flux spattered! Nah, I know he has much more exp. than I ever HOPE to have.
Oh, and my last was with a smashed thumb..LOL. I do thnk it's broke.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

How 'bout a picture of the iron and the solder? Do you use bar solder or a spool?
I soldered up a few metal kick-out flashings in the field recently and just used my torch and a bar of solder. End result was good and looked nice but I'm sure there are better ways.

John,
Heres my tank set up -- propane fired plumbers furnace heating hand irons.
I use half pound bars of 50/50 bar solder,
Forgot to attach the picture.

Very nice Duane !
Between the two threads it's all covered.
Walter,
Thanks for sharing this. As you stated, you and Duane seem to have it "covered"
Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
Chuck,
Good to hear from you. Hope all is well.
I'm not sure I've ever flashed one like this before - up against a wall.
Fun to try something new.
Walter
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. We don't see copper flashings around here very often except for on very old homes and restorations. Mostly galv. metal, aluminum, and some lead.John

John,
The unit Sphere is using is propane fired too. He heats them in that oven and uses the hand iron while hot.
I'll get some more shots today of the soldering.
Walter
Today I made the back cricket which is one sided since it abuts the wall.
A bunch of fabricating and soldering pictures - then the piece in place.
I hope Smitty doesn't catch me embedding 5 pics instead of 4 !!!

You're cheatin' and not using the bars are ya. That heater is electric isn't it?
So you preheat the surface with the iron and chase it with the flux. Pretty nifty. I know if you heat the copper too much it discolors. My soldering experience is mostly limited to electronics and pipe.John

No, the process is light the oven and heat the irons, flux the lock seams, tin the seams when the irons are hot (exactly one cigarette). Lay down the pan and put the iron on idle (away from direct heat), repeat for a few more pans.
Once a bunch are down, I start farthest away from my ladder and at the beginning and flux the now hammered seams..high heat and a 1/4 lb bar ( I had some 1lb bars too from another customer where they weren;t used) and start soaking the joints , adding more flux, and so on.
Too hot means you are ruining the iron, not discoloring the roof. I scoot backwards towards the ladder so I am not kneeling in surface flux. IMO you can't have too much flux IN THE joint, but when you dump the cup (OOoppps) that gets nasty in a hurry, thats why you see a scrap plate soldered to the botom of the corn can with the brush in it.
And yes, like Walt said, it's propane powered just as is my handheld detail torch.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
