Very cool. Thanks for posting that site.
pretty cool.
I had a buddy that worked at the Grand Canyon years ago ...
he used to spend his 4 days off hiking in for 2 straight days ... then climbing out.
Tried a new trail almost every time ...
on one trip in .... he was were to say the least not many other humans had been ...
wakes up one morning ... reading a book over coffee ...
sitting on a rock .... he get's a twitch in his ear ... thought it a fly to he brushes it away w/o looking ... continues reading...
coupla sentences later .. same deal ...
the third time ... he turns his head ... and comes face to face with a humming bird ...
he had his arm resting on his knee .. and was holding his coffee cup up ...
the humming bird was "floating" there ... taking sips out of his cup!
he said he sat for about 20 minutes ... trying not to move ... just watching it dip it's beak in .....
He told one of their resident bird experts about it later ...
they said that seeing as he was so far off the beaten path ...
the humming bird may have never even seen/smelled a human .... and that's why it was more hungry/thirsty that afraid. That .. and he used alot of sugar in his coffee!

Jeff, it's not all that uncommon to get intimate with a humming bird. We have a deck with vines growing around it and the wife has feeders out there. They dance all around when i'm sitting out there.
I used to wear a hunter orange hat in CO during the season even on jobs. Learned not to do that. The humers would be attracted to it, which was inconvenient when you are working on a roof. They would head for my ear with their little beaks.

Don't know why, but, we had several hummingbirds die on a job site once. It was a large house we were building on the North Shore of Lake Superior. When shell was up but windows were not in yet, we would come in in the morning and find dead humming birds with their head stuck in the top pipe of the scaffolding. Thought it was a fluke when I found the first one, but, then we found about five more over the next week or so. All same thing, dead with their heads stuck in the top of the scaffolding pipes.
Strange days indeed.
A Humming Bird can starve to death in one day...
Their faces stuck in the tops of the scaffolding is a clue that they were looking for something eat....
The other is minute concetrations of off gasing from about any thing can be fatal to them too...

Thanks for posting the site. Good on ya.
Waaaay cooool.
Humming birds have always fascinated me. The little guys are a wonder.
Saw a thing on TV a while back about a resort in central or south america that had a huge hummingbird population. That had a terrace where people would sit very still with various syrups... and the hummingbirds would come right up to them and feed. Pretty neat, but don't think I could sit still long enough....hmm..unless maybe I had one of those helmets with the beer cans built in with straws to draw it out.

That would be cool.
When the Humming birds are out in force, stand near the feeder with yur finger pointing out, stand reasonably still and they'll light on yur finger or arm.
Ya need to watch 'cause you'd never know they had lighted unless ya see them do it 'cause weigh nothing and are so gental..
They have the coolest head motions while they look ya over and hey seem to shimmer even at rest....

Hummingbirds are way cool.
Very fearless for something that wieghs less than an ounce.
That probably comes from being able move like lightning.

Very cool site...........
They are so small and delicate............
I had one fall to the floor in the garage because he got wrapped in cob webs.
I very carefully pulled he sticky webs off of the little guy in fear of hurting him.
Man, they are so tiny you can't even feel their weight in your hand........Anyway, he looked at me, probably in fear that I was going to eat him, I'll bet his heart was beating faster than his wings could fly.............
I gently rolled him from his back to his breast in my hand and off he went!
I'll never forget that experience..............
Thanks for sharing your pictures..........

Thanks for this. I forwarded the link to friends who have first-graders.
The other day, I was heading out to the patio wearing this shirt and this little hummer suddenly flew up to me and hovered about 3 inches away from my bust. I think he thought my shirt looked like a flower.
We have 4 feeders up and the little guys have been dive-bombing all summer. Quite entertaining!
Thanks for the link!
Those guys are so cool...
He just saw you as a sweet thing as we all do...

Years back I recall going to the San Diego zoo only to discover a caged hummingbird arboretum chock full of many varieties.
Way cool. If ever in San Diego it's well worth the stop.
Seems our last hummie of the season split two days ago...now we gotta wait til tax time to see the male scouts.
We have to herd them out of houses under construction all the time. My newest helper thought you knock them down with a broom and then take them outside. I think he is stil wondering what a hummer up the butt might feel like.
This spring I heard a thunk on the office window, went outside, and Phee the cat had a hummer in her mouth. Yikes! We worked out a deal, and, slowly but surely the little guy came around...dang good thing, too, cause Mrs 'Snort would've quit being a vegetarian and found out if cat really does taste like chicken, LOL.
Oh, and IMERC, great link, thanks, I've passed it along many times. Don't worry, we can fix that later!
You are a perfect gentleman with the ladies here. It suprises me that youaen't swarmed with them.
Oh, wait - now I just figured out why you moved waaaaayyy back in the woods, LOL
