Here is a nice groin vault with an oval barrel 40 feet long and five oval crossvaults over windows and cased openings.

I honor the place in you

I honor the place in you

Brisketbean nice work. It looks like the approach you took made something that could have been super-complicated a lot simpler. I really like the flexible metal. Does it hold its own radius between two points? Two questions on your technique. One as far as the length of the flexible metal barrel vault ribs did you figure the length of the arc and simply fasten the metal to the groin arch? - plumbed the layout up from the floor? And second as far as the groin arch itself - I've never had the opportunity to do one but have thought about it from time to time. Now can you layout an ellipse with the same rise as the arc of the barrel vault but increase the run, changing it from the diameter of the circle to the hypotenuse of a right triangle using the diameter as the length of both legs. And again beautiful work.

The (arcs) are actually ellipses, there are no radius on this ceiling, the (flexible) metal studs are ridgid after i bend them to the desires forms, the cross vaults on this ceiling are the same oval as the barrel, and yes the rise can be the same regardless of the width. This ceiling is going to be very nice after drywall and finishing. It is simple enough that two college boy laborers were able to do 90% of the work in about three days. It will take about a day to hang the 1/2" drywall and a couple of days to tape and finish yet. We fab these ceilings in my shop on a custom basis and they are easy to install.
Wow!
The "War on Terrorism" has failed - in part by narrowing our options to only the option of last resort.
I propose we start a worldwide Partnership Against Terror, in which the reasonable people of the world work together to oppose terrorism and the conditions which lead people to that desperate condition.

I have always been impressed by your radius work over the years. Your pictures are inspiring, wish I had more opportunity to exercise my skills here.
Was the metal bent on a radius track bender?

Where is Lano Estacado?
Thanks for posting those pics.
That is how I am planning on doing the ones I have to do.
I found out the other day that I have until some time in February before I have to build them.
All the discussion about them lately makes me so much more comfortable about trying them.
Please post pics when drywalled.Friends help you move.

yes on the radius track bender, the lano estacado is the spanish name for the staked plains, in the texas panhandle.
Larry McMurtry described the lano's landscape quite well in Lonesome Dove. Didja read it?
sure i did , one of my favorite books of all time.
Gene, have you heard of Larry's son James. He's a musician and does some really great rock with a mellow rootsy sound. I think he's great.
I'll look him up. My latest fave is a bluegrass singer named Alecia Nugent, and a Texan I have always liked (there are lots to like) is Lyle Lovett.
Man I sure feel sorry for your taper.

i am the taper, stringing tape on the elipses is a little tedious, but it is worth it.
You the rocker too?
I always say I can rock , cause I know the ultinate excuse---- it's ok a good taper can take care of that.
My taper, who is also a good friend---- used to bid jobs I was doing when I had my own gc business---- always asked "who's rockin it" before he would give me a price.“How many observe Christ’s birthday! How few, his precepts! O! ‘tis easier to keep Holidays than Commandments.†—Benjamin Franklin
yes i am the hanger also, i wont tape anything that i dont hang.
First that is beautiful work second do you use paper tape or something like NOTAPE or trimteks plastic tapes "cant think of name of it now". and do you wet 1/2 or use a couple of layers of 1/4 to get that arch ?
Thanks Jim III
Jim 3;
I have a drywall bender, we use 1/2" drywall for radius that are greater than 30", I use regular paper tape for everything except the groins, I use flextape for them, paper with metal strips.
I think those are cool I would like to build some someday just for the fun of it. My daughter might be the first one with those in her play house lol
Thanks Jim III
I gotta ask.
Do you make your living, or do you specialize in, the framing and drywall work for complex vault work such as this?
Gene;
I don't do ceiling work exclusively, but we do a lot of groin vaults, barrels, domes etc on a custom basis. We do lots of round work because I seek work of that nature out, and it seems to find me on a regular basis. We custom fabricate and let others install also, although the drywall work is some times tough for folks that dont have a bender.
admire the workgotta ask, is this drywall bender you speak of something you developed?can't find anything on it and have never heard of it. Is it a sawhorse and hose. <g>
Barry E-Remodeler
It is an invention of mine, it bends to specific radius, no soaking of the drywall, takes about 5 minutes a bend.
thanks for the answer, sounds interestinghave you thought about developing it for sale?
Barry E-Remodeler
yes. have had a patent search and secured a patent opinion, both with favorable results, a shortage of funds is all that is preventing me from going forward at this time.
here is one that we made to mirror the canopy bed in the master bedroom
From your subject, I was expecting a totally different set of pictures.:>)
