A Plea from SYSOP!

SYSOP | Posted in General Discussion on July 8, 2003 11:34am

Many of you will have noticed the mess that has been made of this forum this afternoon all the result of a Troll that continues to plague and spoil what is otherwise a great place. So I am reduced to begging for your help. Please Please Please ignore this Troll, don’t respond and don’t start threads to this troll because it will only lengthen the time in which this troll survives. We are working on a permanent solution but in the meantime I will need your help so if you don’t want to end up with a fully moderated forum then lets all just ignore this Troll. Thanks SYSOP

I'd be all for a moderated forum if it would get rid of the troll.

Question, everytime I ignore the troll, log out and log back in, the ignore function is no longer active ( I must reignore).  Is this the way the system is designed, or am I doing something wrong?

BTW, thanks for recognizing the troll for who he really is.

    I never met a tool I didn't like!

" the ignore function is no longer active ( I must reignore)"

That is not the problem. The few times that I have used ignore it has lasted and lasted.

I think that you are seeing is that person is being banned and then signing back up again with new userID, but the same Nick Name.

Cookies are enabled.  Where is the apply button for ignore?  I usually right click on the Options link in the lower left and scroll to the Ignore Poster link.  I searched the next screen, but couldn't find an apply button.

        What am I missing?

Cursor to the options tab. Left click on ignoe. The screen will wink out and be replaced with apply/continue. You should be in business.

            Tamara,

When I was a kid in grade school in NYC I was taken by the kids that were made fun of. I sort of understood their pains. I kind of have an area inside me that is seriously bothered by insensitivity towards people that are different than the mainstream.

Those folks can either turn into people that can really help our world or really hurt us. Theyre different for one reason or another.

Antagonizing and poking fun is .....well.....you figure it out.

Same with individuals within different cultures, countries, religions....so on and so forth.

I "did" try with Larry but failed. OK so we made peace with one another but that wasn't what I went in there for...I went in there to try and help us all......him, us, me....to no avail obviously.

Yet so many people here were close to no better than him by fanning the fire...antagonizing him...calling him out.

who cares about the "ignore" feature here.

Personally..I just never acknowlege his posts anymore....simple as that.

            Wouldn't ya say?

            Be a poster...not postal person

             Be more in control people

Can someone explain to me what lit up this troll? Or did he have prior issues, got whacked, and signed up under a new name to trash BossHog? I don't follow the non-construction folders very much, so the Republican-Democrat thing is just not my bag man.

It isn't so much Republican vs. Democrat as it is sane vs. insane.

Basically, as I understand it, he was banned forever and a day ago for repeatedly breaking several forum rules. He has been coming back picking fights ever since as a means of revenge. His beef is primarily with Taunton but several of us have allowed our tempers to pull us into his little game of Bobcat and mouse.

Boss and CAG just happened to respond to his antagonism at the right moment to become specific targets but it could have been any number of us, myself included.Kevin Halliburton

There isn't any "reason" involved, but I guess if you can believe the most often stated motivation there is a concerted effort among the management and members to ruin our deranged friend. Boss has nothing to do with it, anyone could be his focus of the day.

This has been going on for quite some time, and here is as good a reason as any.

Tried it, but I don't get an apply/continue screen.  Just a screen that states 'Troll has been added to your ignore list', or words to that effect.

That's okay.  Computer took a shot some months back, I can no longer save hyper links and paste them, and the Breaktime icon is now a generic MSExplorer icon instead of that silly abstract face.

Time to format the old HDD and reload.

Well, maybe in the winter when things aren't so busy.

          TOO COOL.

I use "advanced view" and don't have an "Options" tab or button..I checked  "Basic View" and did not see one there either.

What I do have is at the bottom of the  post texts frame (Right hand frame) are three check marks to rate my interest, one of which is "Ignore"  and an "Apply" button to set it.

I am running Windows 98 and EI 5.5, maybe that makes a difference?????

I run Windows ME, in advanced view.  At the bottom of the thread is a box with three buttons to rate my interest.  The box also has links for all the message numbers in the thread.

            But still no apply/continue.

Here's why. He's been locked out under that name, but logged back in under a new identity, keeping the old nickname. Ignore only looks at the identity, not the nickname. Last night, we took some fairly harsh steps that should put an end to this balderdash. Thanks all for your patience. More information to come.

Hey guys, let's get real for a minute.

I appreciate the time, effort, and costs that are being suffered by the staff and Taunton as a whole.  When Andy says, "fairly harsh steps," I interpret that as expensive.

I'm signing up right now to both FH and FWW.  And buying that CD.

We gotta support these efforts by the Breaktime staff.

        Extending existing subscriptions would help.

          >I interpret that as expensive.

My guess is legal. 'Course, that's the same as expensive. There have got to be some denial-of-service or interference-with-trade or FCC-originated laws being violated. Wonder if you can get a court order to keep someone away from an internet site, as you can keeping them from a physical site...kinda like No Trespassing. Hmmm...

        2. Piffin | Jul 10, 2003 02:35am | #43

That's a fantastic idea! I just got my renewal notice in the mail last week. I guess it's time to order that CD too.

I had been thinking about a small subscription price to post here more than three times a day. That way, a visitor can get a question answered for free and everyone can read along, but the troll would be out a lot of money and he'd have to wait for validation every time he tried to get in..

Nope - I was just a grunt in the Army.We have women in the military, but they don't put us in the front lines. They don't know if we can fight, if we can kill. I think we can. All the general has to do is walk over to the women and say, "You see the enemy over there? They say you look fat in those uniforms." - Elayne Boosle

Change the site rules to include responding to distasteful posts as grounds for suspension of priviliges.  Then when you determine that a post or poster is not welcome at this site, ban the rest.

It would be kind of like policing ourselves in that we would have to decide if responding to someone was worth getting suspended.

Although I may have engaged in the little post wars at one time, it didn't take me long to realize pointless it is.  There are plenty of people here who like to throw fuel on the fire and they are equally responsible for some of the goings on of late.

I like to read all of the posts, but you have to restrain yourself from responding to some of them.

The colorful discussions appear to me to be confined to specific threads.  They don't pull down the overall board because they don't affect the overall set of messages.  And no, I am not blind to the aggressive distastefulness in some of those postings.

      1. ClevelandEd | Jul 09, 2003 03:32am | #11

At this moment the message boards have been "hijacked."  They're covered with a dozens of of copies of the same message basically rendering the message board useless.  So maybe I was wrong in what I said earlier.

        1. FastEddie1 | Jul 09, 2003 03:37am | #12

Glad you saw that.  I was going to reply to your first message when I got through reading all of them, then saw where you came to your senses.  Stupid, isn't it?Do it right, or do it twice.

Thank you - and appologies for spilling a little fuel here and there myself. What can I say, I'm a kid at heart and I've allways gotten a kick out of watching stuff blow up. It's easy to forget that important things get damaged every time it happens.

I haven't posted to the 'cat for quite a while, and won't (assuming I know it's him).  Thanks for your efforts to to keep the forum a more sane place to hang out!

Sorry I posted the "Pluck Yew" title.  I didn't realize that it might be out-of-bounds.  I'll try to be more "tasteful"(?).  Please e-mail me directly if I post anything of concern to SYSOP in the future.

AND, MY APOLOGIES TO TAUNTON AND ALL REGULAR FORUM PARTICIPANTS for getting caught up & carried away at times...  And especially to the regulars for being patient with my questions and inexperience.

It's only been about six months since I first logged on to any forum or really started to use the computer for anything but e-mail and word processing.  Back in late winter/early spring, right when I was just trying to figure out what this place is all about, the forum often seemed like kind of a wide open free-for-all of accusations, mud slinging, complaints, and BS.  I guess it's my nature, when I step into such an environment, to jump right into the fray!

I'm still learning what the limits of this place might be.

This is a terrific place!  Hope it keeps on that way.

            Neil 4,

You just need a native (no, not IMERC..lol) tour guide to turn you on to NY.

My guess is you might just wanna make it home after I get through showing you around town.

I usually stay out of the crowded tourist traps. I know all the best hidden places. You'd definatly have a blast....and hey, I'm only about 45 min. from NYC and its quiet and beautiful round my hood.

Well, haven't been outta this country other than Canada. Never really had a hankerin' to.

My trips across this country were mostly when I was in my teens hitchiking.

You get to "really" see the country that way and really meet the peeps. Not to mention all the adventures. I probably stayed in every state at least a few days.

Sandusky Ohio was the longest stay besides California. Kind of a weird stay in Sandusky..about a month with a group of bikers and their girlfriends, Good group of peeps that I had met individually in other states as well later on by coincidence like outside of Boulder Colo. up top some mtn in an open kinda funky amper theater at a concert.

Had a great stay in Taos for many weeks with the Hog Farm....the little I can remember of that stay...lol....months in Tennesse with Stephen on "The Farm" with his wife Inna May.....Started an alternative school in  Nelson county Virgina..was there a long time....Saw the inside of the Bekely jail for many days during The Peoples Park Riots... also was a carp in the Berkely Hills for a spell.

Saw the inside of the Cook County jail in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention.....as well as the inside of the Tombs here in NY dudring the Columbia College riots (now thats a reallyyy nasty jail....geezzz and I missed Woodstock?(musta been in jail that week..lol)...althoughhhhhhhh I did spend time in Greene County jail and lets not speak about almost four months in Nassau County jail twice (once as a wayward minor, a run a way and once for sales and possesion of hash and acid,,cept I didn't sell it.I gave it away for free) that was after many months staying up in Millbrook with Tim.....Seems those counter culture days started really adding up for my reume'....lolo, yeh now that I think about it, how bout when I ..........

            Cal,

Never heard of them......Stephen Gaskin was the guy that started The Farm...you can find their site if you Google it.

I was there when everyone got arrested (of course) for growing fields of marijuana. Everyone was let off by the way.

You ever make it to Trinidad Colorado? Home of Drop city and a bunch of other communes? I spent about a month working there about six or seven years ago. The one local guy I was working was raised on land right next to it. He was about 11 or 12 at the height of it's heyday. He thought it was cool, naked girls skinny dipping. There's still a couple of multi colored domes around.Who Dares Wins.

My best buddy here was a little kid when his mom moved to Drop City.  He grew up in various communes all the way through high school and became a very good carpenter/contractor.  Several of those Drop City people moved a little northwest and settled at communes called Libre, AAA, and Red Rocks, all west of I-25 in the Huerfano River valley.  Drop City is gone now, but the three Huerfano communes are still here.  Now euphemistically referred to as "Artists Communities"!

I asked the undersheriff if it's true that they fly straight out that direction when they get their annual day or two with a Guard helicopter to look for dope growers.  He said, "Of course it's true!", but went on to say that the primary drug traffic in Colorado is amoung the wealthy resort area folks nowdays.

One of the local "old hippie" crowd was G. W. Bush's college roommate.  Rumor has it that he says dubya was a sober serious student with a deep seated desire to help the poor and downtrodden...  (Ya, right!)    ;)Any jackass can kick down a barn, but it takes a carpenter to build one.

I was on the train outta the city at about 1 in the morning. Jamacia is a city on L.I.

It was just some scrawny sawed off pip squeak of a kid with two of his buds.

Rabbit punch to his throat and then clearly state "next"? That was the end of the issue. Ruined his week. Kept the switch blade for a suvenior. Still got it.

He was still floping like a fish when I got off the train. Nobdy else was fazed in the least. The other folks were kind enough to step over him when they got off.

So that you all understand what we have done here it is: Every new registrants' first post goes into a queue which we will review and then approve. Yes this means that there may be a delay of up to 48 hours say on a weekend for instance. But then after the intial post has been approved the user is then able to post to there hearts content as long as they abide by the terms of service... Break the terms of service and you will never see your posts appear on the site again. It is unfortunate that we had to take such drastic measures.

Hey Andy, going to jail, is that anything like being mainstream? LOL

     John,

well now a days it seems to be with all the blue/white collar crime.

Cept for an old hippie they stuck me in the dregs of the earth....pretty pathetic.

When I visited my daughter in S.F we went for the tour of Alcatraz.....unbelieveable how a person can live like that.....I think I understood it far better than everyone else taking the tour....seems wrong..seems a prefrontal labotomy would be more humane....

Uh... if this is a Honey Moon trip may I suggest that you leave the stack of FHB at home and put that second hand around the shoulder of the little lady next to you. That shoulder could get mighty cold while you're mind is elsewhere if you know what I mean. :-)> Congrats!Kevin Halliburton

Different times is right.  Nowadays we got all them right wing laws that you get busted twice for, say, a joint and then steal a ham sandwich and they throw away the key.  No money for higher ed, but lots to keep the riff raff in expensive prisons.  Which leads into an editorial column by one of my more favorite Texans:

            http://www.creators.com/opinion_show.cfm?columnsName=miv

Of course, we didn't do all that naughty stuff in Berkeley in the '70s that you and Piffin are talkin bout.  I mean all those Bolt Hall law students that went on to high profile judgeships and corporate law firms weren't really sittin around smokin joints at parties - I mean that would have left them too brain addled and no account, now wouldn't it have...
