Went to a civil war reenactment today of the battle of Perryville with Sphere.. Pretty interesting. Had a great time. I never knew the civil war soldiers had so many cell phones.
Here’s some pics.

Good pics - looked like an eye-opener.
BTW what was the score?
At the end of the day the Confederates seemed to be ahead. Today is the final of three and that's when the Union gains the advantage and wins the battle. They should they had close to 50,000 the the Souths 16,000. I might be off on my numbers. Sphere has the stats in his head.

Are you saying there was 66000 out there...or was that during the actual event? All in all, it's fascinating. And rather daunting. I doubt if the 'game' participants would have been as excited during the real thing. I recall photos taken at the time with stacks of partially-decomposed bodies - and how ineffably sad it all was.
there is a group on the UK called the Society for Creative Anachronism that replay England's civil war - Cavaliers and Roundheads. Another Brit group enact the US one - I had a friend ask that when I moved to Canada I would sent him back a 'coon tail for his Davy Crockett-type outfit. Never found one, tho, without the 'coon attached!
Like I said. Sphere knows the numbers but I think it was around 66,00 total participants in the real one. They were expecting a crowd of 40,000 for the reenactment. Someone told us that at the real one the blood was so thick that people were sliding in it.

You got it close.
WAR was 55k Union and 16K CSA. About 1500 dead right away, with 7k casualties and a lot of them took months to succumb.
Now the kicker is that only about 20k of the 55k actually fought the 16K...
The State Trooper I spoke w/ said they were expecting 50K Visitors/actors for the weekend tripling Boyle Co.'s pop. and making it the 15th most populated Co. in KY, FOR THE WEEKEND. Thats funny right there.

Yeah. seems no one really knows the particulars exactly, but there were not MANY houses over here from the battlefield, mine is one of the few that were here and taken advantage of.
I noticed a few miles towards the battlefield from here one other house that has the same type dormers as mine, dating it ( and the logs, the way the corners were cut) as being just as old and likely made by the same "crew" or clan.
I was told by the county telling the previous families that lived here, that mine is the oldest in this part of the county.

I don't think it is, I am sure it is. But not like a nasty thing, just leftovers.
Funny, this came up a year orr so ago, when I saw a "something " down by the stairs. Not much since, but the dog has been chasing imaginary things for the last few months. He just wakes up in the night and takes off like he is after a cat or a squirrel or something...then gets all confused looking, and goes back to his bed.
Didn't make the connection till just now, we thought he was just going nuts or senile, or having dog dreams.
Could be that he senses the same that I saw.

Cool....We saw a reenactment in upper state NY a couple of years ago....Genesee Village, I think.....It rained like hell, but a fun time.....Some of these actors go from state to state.......
I read in the program/guide that most of those enactors do 18 weekends a year, at some of the most pivotal battle sites.
Impressive amount effort on thier part, often under worse conditions climate-wise then the actual battle was experiencing.

It's still cool, though.....As I recall, we were going to go to the Finger Lakes Wine event, but it cost $50 to just get in! So, we went down the road to Genesee, NY and watched the reenactment.....
Yea I heard a few of them discussing different ones they were going to attend this year. Lot's of time and money.

Takes a lot of dedication to do that.....The uniforms alone must cost a fortune......In NY they had a field hospital set up with original medical instruments.....Yuck, those were not the good ol days!
No it wasn't good at all. Sphere and I were looking at a medical tent with all the old school instruments. I spotted a set of tools I had seen used on the show Deadwood. They were long metal rods of different diameters. I told the Doc. I think I saw those used on Deadwood." He said they were urinary tract tools. "Yep that's what I saw them used for." I said. "They stuck them up the guys pee pee hole and knocked a kidney stone out of the way." He nodded his head in agreement. Every guy around was already grabbing their lower parts and moaning. We walked away in a hurry.

Its a good thing they weren't re-enacting THAT.
I seem to remember my friend's son paying some rediculous price for antique glasses frames that he put his current prescription in. For a lot of these guys, having the real thing is worth it.
Yep. Authentic has a higher price tag on it.

And I'm just guessing here-
but I'll bet the original battle didn't have all those spectators looking on.
LOL. I told Gunner I felt like an embedded reporter from CNN, being so close to fracas and melee.
I think he mumbled something about " can you eat fracas and melee?" He was getting hungry after walking about 30 miles.

Perhaps not in the civil war, but in various battles in Europe there would often be on-lookers. Because the battles were by soldiers in array - rather than guerillas, and the two WW's etc - and the artillery was not likely to be firing in all directions, then it was usually safe. Yes, they'd bring chairs, etc to watch from. Very often the battles would be over by lunch time so there was no need of tables (except to place the wine glasses on - a civilised affair).
that's interesting-
but I can't imagine doing that myself
LOL....Did they tell you about the leeches?
No but he did show us an instrument for cutting open a sore so they could bleed the bad blood out.

Cool pics.
A friend's son is into the re-enactment stuff.( the son is about my age, actually).
Those guys can spend a small fortune on their outfits and gear.
Yea it's a lifestyle for sure. They buy and build their own cannons too. Sphere and I had some old timer attach himself to us. He explained quite a bit about building them and different types. There was one there that another guy pointed out that came from the civil war that they were using in the reenactment. I don't know how many f those there were but he didn't seem amazed by it.
I think it's more expensive then the tool hobby.

We lived in Fredericksburg, VA for 2 yrs.
Old downtown would occasionally have all of the re-enactment folks in full dress, confederate and union uniforms. The ladies in the attire for the time were something to see.
It was obvious that they had invested serious money. The uniforms were beautifully fitted to the gents.
The horses were also up and down the street with all the equipment. They were beautiful animals (expensive). Most of the riders were (of course) decked out as officers and really looked the part.
Since Fredericksburg has a union cemetery with 15,000 and a confederate with I believe around 5,000 graves, it really brings it to life.
