Acceptable Variation in Joist Height
I’ve done a lot of finish carpentry over the years but never framing. I’m now framing my own house and I need to ask what the acceptable variation in joist height is.
I’m using Southern Yellow Pine 2X8 lumber on 16 ” centers and I’m spanning at the most 9.5 feet. Most of the 2X8 are 7 & 1/4 inches but a few vary that I somehow didn’t catch in the nailing down process. In several places there is 1/8th to 3/16ths difference from the top of adjacent joists measuring at the top where the subfloor will be nailed on. Most of the joists came out really very even but there are a few stinkers and I’m not sure if I need to do something about them. So how much variation at the tops of the joists is acceptable? Thanks guys.

usually.....
I usually figure anything less than 1/4" is good. And most of the time it is.....
