i’m assuming it’s a duct because the hole is about foot underneath a vent (i know, genius)
from researching around it sounds like there’s no immediate concern but i don’t like the idea of leaving a hole in the duct. i’m not hanging the shelf i was going to hang there anymore so i can do whatever i want with this hole now. what happens if i leave the hole open, or just seal the drywall, or try to seal the duct? thoughts on how to go about sealing the hole?
thanks in advance

If you could get at the hole from inside the duct I would just run a short metal screw from inside the duct to seal the hole. Then go over it with duct sealant to leave the inside as smooth as possible and be sure it is sealed. Alternately you could just use duct sealant. My only concerns would be the duct leaking and causing moisture to build in your wall. And lint catching on the duct where the screw went through eventually causing a clog or reduced flow in the duct.
Depends on how big the hole is.
you can squirt some caulk or adhesive into the hole and call it good.
Or you can pull the vent cover off and reach in and put some tape over the hole,
(or use duct seal, and do the rest of any joints you see while you are at it.)
Be very careful if you decide to go behind the register.. sheet metal installers do not worry much about sharp edges inside the ducts. but you may.
