I haven’t seen any mention of how primeguard type coated deck screws fair in this new corrosive environment – does the coating protect them, do they lose too much going in? I’ve mentioned all the concerns about hangers and fasteners to the foreman on a truly massive resort project, as we’re using regular old simpson stuff, and he’s forging ahead….when do I tell the owner? Late friday after I’ve got a new job?

Did a deck a few weeks back with composite decking. Had to decide between SS and the Primeguard variety. Decided to go with SS, it may be more expensive, and they strip out easier, and the heads snap off once in a while... why did I use them again? Oh yeah, so in a few years time, I wouldn't have to go back and correct the problem NOT using them made.
But that's just my opinion. I figure the jury is still out on Primeguard's performance in ACQ (as far as I know) and played it safe. Story of my life.
I don't know about official certifications, but bought a box of coated deck screws yesterday that said "suitable for use with the newest pressure-treated lumber". No ASTM or other designation. These were not Primeguard. It is my understanding that Primeguard Plus coated fasteners are approved for use with ACQ. If they're really OK, I'd rather use them than galvanized. If single-dipped galvanized fails after a couple years, triple-dipped is going to fail too. Just take a decade longer. Stainless or coated seems a better choice.
