Navy housing from the 1990’s slow in decaying – 6000 Navy + families in 1996, now none, about 80 perm. residents. Siding has blow off some of the 4-plexes, metal roofs look to be in good shape yet.
last day there ashore had 100 mph gusts and steady 60 mph wind, fairly typical.
Stayed in a 4-plex ashore (pix out the back door) – “sheds’ were for parents to say out of the wind while watching the playground.
1st day was a rare calm/clear day. Next day 70-100 mph winds on the sbx vessel.

What is it about a place like that that makes me want to move there?
The only attraction to that place would be a comfortable recliner and satellite TV I got no interest in the weather there.

One of many bases to shutdown after Berlin wall fell.
There is a lot of major infrastructure still there - a $20 million high school with olyimpic pool and a $18 hospital had just been built in 1990. Hear the air force is going to pay to re-open the pool as a community outreach as Adak is now the home base for the SBX. ($2 Billion X-band radar on a floating oil platform off the coast)
Aleut corp was deeded the entire island by the US gov. in late 90's. They have a website (google Adak) with all the oportunities to move into completed infrastructure - only a few fuel supply operation are there.
Junkhound,
How many people live in Adak. Is the halibut fishing, crabbing and shrimping pretty good?

all that wind must have made for some interesting landings, aside from that the land looks too "wild" to be comfortablenice shots though ...glad you made them reallly big :).
