Adding exterior window trim

I am removing the aluminum trim from exterior vinyl casement windows. Adding  1×6 primed cedar that will be painted. Do I need to weatherproof under trim boards? Next step is refacing exterior existing cedar in good condition with LP SmartSiding board and batten.
