Adding Insulation to Basement Walls By Martin Holladay Issue 253 – August/September 2015
Just read Martin’s article and am wondering about this: “Building codes require most types of foam insulation to be protected by a layer of gypsum drywall.” My question is whether it’s ever acceptable to NOT cover the foam with drywall? In other words leaving it “unfinished” – like in a furnace room, laundry room, or storage area of a basement? Is this a fire code thing becasue the foam is more flammable? What’s the story? Thanks!

It's a fire code thing. There have been a number of rather serious incidents where the foam caught fire, causing the death of dozens at a time.
