adding nail fin to Milgard vinyl windows
I am trying to figure out a re-siding project that involves adding sheathing, exterior foam, and new siding to an old (1939) house that currently has beveled siding directly over the framing (no sheathing of any kind.) The old windows have been relatively recently replaced with good quality Milgard low-e and argon-filled vinyl windows, but the window contractor simply knocked out the sash and left the exterior frames (jamb, header, and sill) in place, attaching the replacement windows inside the existing window frames.
I am concerned about getting a good seal around the perimeter of the existing window frames, especially with the added depth of foam. I am wondering if I could pull out the existing replacement windows and somehow add a nail fin so that they could be installed in plane with the new sheathing.
How would you approach this?

Use "sheathing tape" (eg,
Use "sheathing tape" (eg, Tyvek tape) and carefully tape around the windows, sealing them to your wrap/flashing.
by that you mean tape around the existing window frames?
Yep, tape the frames to housewrap or whatever flashing you use.
I wouldn't use tape
If you are leaving the wood frames in place, I would amend them to match the thickness of the wall.
If you want to install the vinyl directly into the wall, I would add nailing fins using 2x2 metal flashing, panhead screws, and an appropriate sealant.
