Adding support beam without leveling joists
Structural engineer is recommending that I firm up joists in my settled 1900 home by adding beams and lally columns. To be clear, this is not to level the floors, which have sleeper systems above to create a mostly level floor. I’ve determined that much of the settling had occurred by 1940s. Engineer doesn’t think the house is actively moving, but we’ll be doing renovations and want to keep everything in place
Question is—how would one add a beam when the joists are uneven by up to almost 4 inches from perimeter to center of house? Should the beam be added in 2 parts, one for each side? Would an LVL be scribed to the existing contour?
Still tbd on how much would I’d do on my own (eg I might dig and set the footers and hire out the columns and beams). But I just want to get a sense of how this would even work.
