Adjusting Pocket door stops

Lansdown | Posted in Construction Techniques on November 11, 2006 04:33am

Anybody have any suggestion on how to adjust a pocket door stop, with the wall in place of course. I was thinking of using every extension on my ratchet set and a flex head. I’d rather not cut a whole in the wall, but I did leave cutouts on the interior plywood lining just in case.

I just framed out and installed two frames for P doors today.

I don't know if it is me, the hardware or the interesting point that the doors intersect at a T, but I'm not keen on them.

Can you put a bumper on the door?

As I prudently placed the included bumper on the 2x4 stud at the back of the framing, I was heard to mutter; " A lot of good this is gonna do in two years when it falls off and it's not even adjustable."

Unfortunately not. The bumper, or rather stop, is track mounted. I put them on and snugged them up when I installed the tracks and framed the walls well over a year ago. I just finally installed the doors (they are 3' x 9' fir panel doors, big and heavy). I have 3 of them, and in one instance 2 of them come out either end of a 6' pocket wall, so if you peered through the pocket you could see daylight at the other end.
The pockets are framed with 1 1/2" 20ga metal studs, lined with 1/4" luan on the inside, 5/8" rock on the outside. As I mentioned, I left cutouts in the luan, in case I have to cut access holes, but I'm trying to avoid that if I can.

        Sounds like a nice setup.

Can you bumper the door still at the location of the stop at the track?

Or, get the keyhole saw out.[email protected]

The bumper stops the door, but about an inch too far in.
I was hoping you weren't going to mention the keyhole saw...argghh.

Put a block on the edge of the door-the bumper on that to make up the distance.

Pull the leading end off the track and turn door.  Mount block and bump.  Feed the block back into the opening, remount to track.

            Calvin.
That might work, I'll give it a try. I hope I can get it right the first time, cause they are buggers to take down. Thanks.

It'll work.  measure what you need to add b/4 you dismantle.

Take only the one edge down from the track ( drop it on a "shim" block), pivot it around and draw the other end over a bit.  Mount the block and bump.  Thread that edge back in the hole, remount to track.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

Ditto Calvin. The first thought that came to my mind and you worded it so well. I've done this procedure a few times and it works just fine.

    Cals Idea sounds good...

    BUT...

    Is the existing stop LOOSE???

cause if it is you will be wasting your effort...

could you pull the base board and put a stop on the floor???

just throwing out Ideas in my liberal way:)

and hear them echo through the hills

The existing stop is secure, but the baseboard idea is a novel one too. Geez, the Dems win the election and the carpentry techniques just start pouring out :-)
