I’m looking to do a random plank floor. My question is how random is random? If I’m using three sizes, what’s the best way to make it not look like a repeating pattern? When doing a long run, should all the pieces in that run be the same width? Can someone recommend some reading material? Any input would be great.

All pieces in one run need to be the same width. You generally get fewer of the wider pieces. Something like 3-4-3-4-5 looks reasonable. Lay out a section dry and see what it looks like before nailing.
