I have seen central air conditioner compressors mounted on steel braces attached to foundation and some on concrete patio blocks, can anyone tell me the proper way to go. Thanks.

The reason that outdoor units (condensers) are mounted off of the ground is twofold. One, during new construction the grade is seldom finished when the unit is placed and the unit is less likely to be hit, bumped, moved etc., hopefulling lessening the likelyhood of damage to the unit. Also, the HVAC contractor can finish their job and not have to come back to set a condenser after final grading is done. In areas where winter snow is common and a heatpump is installed, getting the unit up above the gound plus minimum expected "snowpack" is a good idea. Other than that, on a level, water shedding, stable surface that allows/maintains the recommended clearance around the unit and protects the lineset and electrical supply is the "proper way to go". I have one of mine installed on a polypropylene square "pad" sitting on top of some leveled gravel, 18" from the side of the house, the other one sits on a poly pad on a concrete patio slab.
Be careful mounting your Air Conditioner, there is voltage and freon and stuff involved...and starting out with dinner and a movie is good first move.
