I plan on going to a tool auction tomorrow and possibly get a framing and/or roofing nailer. They advertise all major brand names.
So the question is…should I consider one type of nail set up over another? I see online there are lots of choices ie..round head plastic strip, Clipped head paper, Coiled wire… etc
My concerns are that I will get a great deal on a gun only to find out it takes ONLY the most expensive type of nails or the one that won’t fire anything but the guns own name brand and you can’t buy them on Sunday because the “dealer” store is closed.
Is there a more “typical” or “basic” type??
Thanks

and you won't get those nails on Fridays or Saturdays either....
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
What kind of nails can you buy locally? If you're buying a framing gun you probably want a Senco or a Hitachi and you want full-round-heat plastic-collated 21-degree nails.
Buy whatever brand you want. Nails are available all over the US to fit most guns.
Around here we stay away from nailors that require 28degree nails. I just found out the harborfreight sells them That means I don't have to buy a new ocasional framer!!!
By the way, have used off brand nails for years, and truthfully only had problem with one brand. No longer sold around here, so really don't care!
The crew I was on goes through in excess of 2 skids of nails a month. In the summer almost 4. We go with the cheapest now!
Make sure you can get the nails locally.
Around here Bostitch framing nailer is the most common and it takes a 28degree wire weld clipped head nail.
Friend bought a different brand for occasional home use then found he could not easily get nails locally, they have to order them in.
Thanks guys...looks like I will try to go with a brand name.
They advertise all the big names:TOOLS: AIR COMPRESSORS, PRESSURE WASHERS, AIR NAILERS, MITRE & CIRCULAR SAWS, RECAHRGEABLE KITS, HAND TOOLS, AIR TOOLS, PLUS MORE!! MANUFACTURERS SUCH AS: DEWALT, SKIL, BOSTITCH, BOSCH, HITACHI, MAKITA, DELTA, MILWAUKEE, AND MORE!! And try to get a 21 degree and avoid the 28....and worry about nails laterThanks againWard
I like the duo-fast nailers. I have had mine for almost 25 years and repaired one time. Don't know if the nails are available where you live. Bostich and Senco and Duofast have been around the longest but I would have to say that Senco and Duofast are the best.
I have a Duo-fast wide crown stapler, I love it.
Never fails, never jams.
But to the OP, know the price of what you're bidding on. Don't pay retail + in the heat of the bidding.
Have you been to a tool store to look at what you want? Pick it up and see how it feels?
Framing nailers are big heavy tools, don't buy something that you won't be confortable with.

Where you at? I see your profile says top of NY but theres a lot of area up here. I saw some auctions in the local paper (watertown) but I think it was in govenour and some other places that are a bit of a drive from me, not in watertown.... Anyways I would be VERY interested if you would tell me what kind of prices and tools they have offered there. Might be worth it to check out. If your even in the right area
Thanks
If that ad copy was from the auction then I suspect you might be attending one of the traveling tools shows that tour the country. Watch what you buy, look carefully. They are notorious for loss leaders in small quantities and then a whole bunch of #### filler.
Much of the stuff is rebuilt which isn't inherently a problem , but when sold for new tool prices it is a rip off.
Life is Good
This is tool/electronics auction ..I suspect they will be rebuilts I have been checking online for prices (amazon/e-bay) so I WON"T pay to much. Wich is why I didn't want one that was going to cost a mint to put nails into.
I go to a lot of auctions and have learned the heat of the moment lesson(anybody want to buy an antique stove??)
This is just for my work around the house..my shoulders and wrist can't swing a framing hammer any more. Also I got such a great deal on a Dewalt 15 Gallon compressor at an auction last year I might as well get some use out of it. Ward
Where is the auction??
It was in Gouvenor...but it was a bust. Nothing like what was advertised.
They had one Makita and one Dewalt Framer, both reconditioned.
Also had a Makita sidewinder saw...but I couldn't sit through all the TOYS they had to go through first...They did say something about not getting all the Tools they had hoped....Oh well I'll keep shopingWard
If you decide on a used nailer, I have bought several from this ebay seller. He does repair them before selling, or sells them as parts only. http://stores.ebay.com/1TO4-TOOLS-and-MORE
