This month’s issue of FH had a great article by Mike Guertin about constructing a horizontal ceiling mounted airtight attic access door. Anyone want to share how the door can be modified to work on a vertical wall access door to an attic space? The horizontal door depends on gravity to press against the weatherstripping. I don’t think this will work well for a vertical door.

Weatherstrip technology for vertical doors is pretty mature. Just put hinges and a latch on both inner and outer doors. If you don't want the hatches on hinges, maybe those spring loaded clips that we used for screens and storm windows in the olden days would work.
