all purpose compound to ‘blend’ drywall to durock
Due to a remodel job the back side of a shower niche protrudes into a room I plan to drywall. It’s the smooth face of 1/2 durock. How do I blend this into the new drywall I will be putting up. I thought of using 5/8 without taping the joint and a 1/8 in skim coat of all purpose.

If it's a joint that tile will bridge over, I would use the same fibreglass tape that was used with the durock, bedded in Durabond 90 (45 if your not slow). You can top with regular compound. Make the wall side look decent-no "perfection" but good required behind the tile.
Thanks Calvin for the tip.

You definitely need to tape the joint -- either that or make it a "feature". Mud without tape will quickly crack at the joint.

I had a feeling about the tape, thanks for the tip.
