Alternative to cedar on open lath roof?
The cedar shingles on our 1909 foursquare have seen better decades (no leaks yet). Were I to redo it, is there another lightweight roofing that could nail to 1×4 lath, rather than adding solid sheathing? The 2×4 rafters are in fine condition, but solid sheathing and asphalt shingles would add an awful lot of weight. Plus, with no soffit vents, the attic vents just fine (in Colorado’s dry climate) with the open lath and cedar, combined with a power exhaust vent. High tech, low tech, a 50 year “guarantee” on composites invented two years ago, what is out there? Do I reshingle with cedar or bulk up the framing and start solid?

Lots of choices, heres some links to get you started:
http://www.ecostarinc.com has recycled rubber made into slate-like roofing, weighs about the same as cedar shakes, about the same price, class c fire rating which is far better than cedar
http://www.ecoshake.com recycled plastic and cellulose, cedar-look-a-like shingles, weighs about the same as cedar, class A fire rating, priced about same as cedar, comes in several shades
Rustic Shingle, Classic Products Inc800-543-8938, aluminum shingles that look like Cedar, come in lots of colors.
Any of the galvinized-aluminum roof metals, come in 3-foot wide sheets and are cut to what ever length you specify. Can be installed over skip sheathing and weigh a good deal less than cedar.
