Mother in law is looking at buying on of the as seen on Television, “Amish Heaters.” It seems like a scam. Or at least a gimmicky space heater.
Has anyone bought one? Does it work? What did you pay for it?
I may be getting to cynical.

I must say first, I don't own one.
My impression is that it is no more than an electric heater!

They do use electricity in their work, just not in their home. They generate their own electricity though, with gas or diesel generators, and I assume any other means is ok as long as it isn't directly connected to the grid.Mostly they use cordless, air and hydraulic tools. They don't have a major problem with the use of batteries, for certain uses.

I realize that. Have a brother that lives in Lancastor PA, have visited and read several books on the Amish and there practises and beliefs.
There's a lot of myths about them. They're an odd bunch.
Somewhat.
Their views on what can and cannot be used is somewhat "funny" to say the least.
One of my buds in the Pipeorgan shop was a real cut up, he could make anything funny. Well, he came up with a Amish Rap routine that would make your ribs hurt from laffing.
"Leroy Stoltzfuss" was his character's name..awe man, I grin just thinking about it.

"Wait until people get their electric bills !"
Kind of ironic if you think on it -- Amish don't even use electricity, but they make electric heaters? Hmmmm.Mike HennessyPittsburgh, PAEverything fits, until you put glue on it.
Yes it is!
<<Kind of ironic if you think on it -- Amish don't even use electricity, but they make electric heaters? Hmmmm.>>The Amish work is just "value added." Supposedly ... they only build the custom cabinets to house the heaters. I saw the commercial and the Amish craftsmanship in the cabinet was just the sales pitch for the electric heater. The Amish are not really against electricity, per se, rather they are against the "connections" to the world. So they use cell phones instead of landlines, and diesel generators instead of nat. gas pipes. My favorite hardware store is Lehman's Non-Electric in Ohio. It's just amazing what you can buy there -- gas powered washing machines and LP refrigerators -- but no $500 Electric heaters!
I've seen those commercials and you're right about the Amish only building the wood boxes. I'm also pretty sure that none of the guys in the commercial are Amish. The beards look like they would blow off in a light breeze. - lol
The Amish do not like to have their picture takin. I agree that they are most likely actors. It's like buying" Amish Chicken" or "Amish Furniture". It may be made where they live but it's not "Amish Furniture". Amish Furniture does not look any thing like the stuff you see in stores. Somebody is exploiting their crapmanship.:)
And Lahman's Hardware in Kidron,Oh is a must see. The place is huge and you can find just about anything in there. Not another Wal-mart. Even have tire knockers aka fro handles. A must see if your in the area.

I agree Hammer.Lehman's Hardware is more of a museum than a hardware store.
So I guess to summarize there is no honesty in advertising?
Stop the world I am getting off. Seriously I do appreciate the quick advice and reality check. Ginsu knives were the last As Seen On TV fantastic invention.Jon

Looks like a wonderful...
Piece of marketing hyperbole
There was an ad for a similar if not exactly the same thing in the Sunday Supplement to the newspaper. On and on they went about Amish craftsmen and UL approved and yada yada yada. A near magical device that produces heat! Whoda though that could happen by just plugging into wall outlet?
I say BS, get a space heater.
Or let her buy it and tell us if there's a genie inside.
Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.
I read the newspaper ad pretty closely - they hype the hand-rubbed Amish Mantle, show the buggy and the quonset hut (?) barn, but the fine print says the electric space heater is made in China. It's just a dang electric heater with "Amish" packaging.

The infomercial is well done no question about it. That's why I asked the initial question it just seems to be too good to be true. She was looking at spending 500 bucks to buy it from a local supplier. I can't imagine a 1500 watt heater is worth that.Jon"There is no good answer to a stupid question"
Russian saying
Yeah, with regard to resistance heaters a watt is a watt. Variations in quality and safety, of course, and some minor variation in "comfort" depending on whether the heater uses hot wires, oil-filled tubes, ceramic elements, etc, and whether it has a fan, but still they're all exactly equally efficient.
As I stood before the gates I realized that I never want to be as certain about anything as were the people who built this place. --Rabbi Sheila Peltz, on her visit to Auschwitz
I'm not certain, but I think that I heard they don't even have heating elements, just a light bulb!
It's a scam. I can't believe the Amish haven't sued someone over this.
Someone reputable (Consumer Reports maybe?) ran a review on these and as suspected it's a big ripoff. But I can't imagine anyone's shocked by that...PaulB

Here's what people don't understand about electric heaters -- no matter how they are packaged, how they heat the air, how they are marketed -- they are all 100% efficient, no more, no less. There is no way that one space heater can save you money over another. The only major differences are quality and the way the heat is delivered.
Run for the hills and take your MIL and her money with you.
The same group that runs the 'Amish' heaters is also peddling 'free safes' (with the purchase of some coins that you could pay your local bank $300 for, or the "World Reserve Monetary Exchange" about $1,862 for). I saw an ad for the 'free safe' running in the paper about 2 months back, and there was something about the loopy text that reminded me of the 'Amish' heater crew. Very light digging turned up that they were indeed related.
Here's some info on the group that's behind the scenes.

Hey - that article's a darned cool find - enoyed reading an analysis of those ads.

It's an expensive space heater. It'll work no better than a $29 unit you buy at Wally World.

This has been discussed before, I think so search for a thread. Generally, though, no, they aren't the best thing since sliced bread. Fancy space heaters that will not necessarily and magically cut your heating bills.
All good points. Now if you guys could shuffle over to Sunday dinner and explain it to her. I'll be the guys at the kids table.Jon"There is no good answer to a stupid question"

I always thought an "Amish Heater" was some kind of gun - like maybe a blunderbus or something.
Forrest
Tell your MIL she's already got a heater that puts out as much heat at the same efficiency: her blow dryer. (For $500, I can make her an Amish-ish box to put it in.)
One watt = 3.4 BTU's and no one is ever going to change that.
Actually, Obama's gonna' mandate a change
