In his first interview since the stroke, Ram Dass, 66, spoke with great difficulty about how his brush with death has changed his ideas about aging, and how the recent loss of two old friends, Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsberg, has convinced him that now, more than ever, is the time to ``Be Here Now.''

Looks like you've got quite a project there, but I got to tell you that pool isn't quite what I imagined when you first described it...
Thanks JonNever be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark, Professionals build the Titanic.

CAG,
I wasn't here for that. But.... you mean you can't picture pool parties and babes all gathered round sunning themselves? Teki torches at night. LOL

When I first walked back behind the house and saw that pool it kinda freaked me out too.....What the fu......????? Its here so......HAd a pretty cool pool co. here (All Isrealies...geezzz) and Shlomie did all the work so far. Way nice guy that doesnt take a smile off his face. Seems all I need now is to have it cleaned. Filter is in and new lines (I did the excavation work). Looks like a fuggin mess but you know what I say. (" A creative mess is better than an idol tidieness)
soon to be awesome......Gonna pull down that ugly fence and put up some wood kind a thing way further back and pull up the bricks and do all river rock hanging over the pool edge( coping) as well. Uhhhhh....how many years do I have left to live?

Could be fun...
Finding people out of the paper is never good, I have no experience hiring people but I have seen what an add in the paper can get you, 50/50 toss up either way.Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark, Professionals build the Titanic.
Geesh, what's the problem? Looks better than most of the new stuff I have to work on. 12 over 12 windows, cheap glass replacement. You gotta love having a vintage 1680's pool. Mighta been a community bathtub....oh yeah, Puritans...
Place looks so small, and you're not done yet!<G>
I'll bet that tipi is real comfy, though.
I gotta take a ride up there... EliphIno!
Bucky...anytime you want you can stay here with your family.....only 45 minutes to NYC.
I'd only say that to a few so, feel blessed...lol.....think we can get that stuborn Bosshog Ron here with his family? Oiy vey...bet in his part of the woods they never met a Jew.....LOLLLLLL.....although I might just have to come over there and enlighten them with a a game of dradle.....Hey, I did it in the foothills of Virginia and they still write me letters...lol.....course the letters they send me are all in picture form.

The visiting offer is one you may just taken up on. I still have strong ties to NYC... and one of my favorite aunts lived in Huntington, LI.
Grew up in a 3 story stone place in Lancaster, PA. ca 1774. I know you've got a hunnert years on that...was a saw and grist mill, on a river. Previous owners turned the mill into a pool. A cool pool, they left some towers to dive off of...
I actually envy you, and like Doud says, restore lightly...
Be the house EliphIno!
Bucky
I can walk to Huntington in about 20 minutes.
Its one of the coolest towns in this country. The streets are loaded with peeps every summer night. Hecksher park has a museum with the best of the best from rembrants to Van the man. Different shows there every months or so. the park has free concerts all summer at the bandshell from Richie HAvens to just about everyone.
Then theres IMAC (inter media arts center) a not for profit music hall. saw Dr. John and Donovan and the Jefferson Starship there. Not bad for a small town huh?
Stop by any ol' time......I think this house may be on the list for Break timers..just bring yer camera cause I can't figure mine out.
Where's Luka when ya need him...lol?

Looks like you got your work cut out for you. Reminds me of a place of around the same vintage I worked on many moons ago. Tapered pine plank floors. They left the tree taper in the planks and reversed each adjacent plank so they'd match. Had to pull the floor to do some other work and had to number each one so we could lay them back properly. There's something satifying about working on a place that old that you don't get from a tract house.

Takes all kinds.
I know more people around here that'd rather deal with new homes then this mess. But this mess to me makes me feel privlaged and keeps a smile on my face every time I take a step on these old floors.
Too bad so many decades of abuse and neglect were bestowed on this ol' house.
Spose if it wasnt neglected I might have never gotten it.

Great pics, Jon!
Occasionally, I've seen Andy come unputtied over in the tavern. I suspect it might have less to do with the subject matter than that he's been meditating in that catacomb you labeled "scary."
Any sign of WMD down there?
:-)
Looks like a bigtime project house....but worthwhile.
Out here on the Oregon coast, where the winters are fairly mild and wet, old houses tend to give way to the elements over time and gradually compost themselves. I've worked on some 100 year old houses that rivaled Andy's for wear and tear.
For the sake of a civilian with somewhat limited construciton skills, despite my fascination with the subject, what has you concerned in the photo titled "Scary"? Is it the rusted bx cables, their loosened, haphazard stringing, or is there something wrong with that beam? What is the white substance partially covering on the beam? Thx.
Griff,
It's the troll thats got him scared. Not often seen under new houses.
Cool pics.
KK
don't see what all the fuss is about - - it's in better shape than most local houses - tuckpoint the foundation and wrap some fresh wire around that florescent light - don't go changing all that history for the sake of a little comfort and security!
be unrestored ;)
DOUD
Dave and everyone
If you were in that part of my house down in the bowels you'd be scared too. Kinda hard to describe.
One thing thats scarey is that those floor joists (trees, bark and all) still exist. It always amazes me every time I go down there. Not to mention three cables that you can see down there that wrap completlely around three sides of the house to hold it together. Goes from the front of the basement accross the ceiling and up around the rear of the house under the shingles and comes accross the attic floor to the front again.
I think thats what had most people worried that didn't buy this house. Its a good reason to build the additions out back (thats the way the house is leaning). I figure with a good strong foundation and 2x 20 foot walls I mean 2x6 it should really stabalize this crib.
Anyway.....Be scared..nahhhh...Boooooo

What a clever use of rebar...now why didn't I think of that. I rebuilt a 1901 house, and that was old enough for me.
Andy...be brave!
"what has you concerned in the photo titled "Scary"?"
Griff,
Ever heard the term "Genus Loci" It means that special "sense of place" you get from all that is surrounding you as you stand somewhere. I didn't feel too safe down there. The pics don't do it injustice. Like I said, Andy is a very ambitious man. Based on the architects drawings I saw, the place will be fantastic when done.
Jon
Well, I wish you and Andy a lot of mazel in your project.
Maybe you should get the guys from TOH over there to help.
Maybe Bob Vila is available!

You got me (not particularly difficult). I'm strictly amateurish with Yiddish. Shiksa?
You say mozel...I say mazel... No, sorry, that was Fred Astaire.
In any event I was spelling phonetically from what I've always heard my best friend say whenever we got in a jam. At least once a day! Is there really a difference? Never asked for a translation of Mazel Tov before....always assumed it meant "good luck to you" or something similar. I figured you'd need it. But I guess I was just underestimating you. I'm impressed!
You're right about women, though. Hard part is knowin' when what you got is what you're going to need.

Just want to thank you again for the pic....Seems I always take on too much. the digital camera I boughts gonna take schooling to learn I think....lol.
What else is new....seems I have a track record for quality and interesting things that are complicated. MAybe I should learn that the empty spaces add sometimes more then the ones filled up...but then again I'm sure I'll have time for that when they lay me down.....nahhhhhh, that'll be the day. I figure in my next incarnation I'm coming back as a frustrated ............

Andy,
You're welcome.
If it seems like I've been scarce on BT lately, it's cause I have....way too much work to do in the next month. I get married in the middle of July, and have a "to do list" a mile long, including finish bathroom, finish landscaping, finish all (oak) trim, paint, etc., etc.., all by ~ July 10. Plus, things at work have gotten very busy. So I'm out the door at 5:00am, and end my day at 9:00pm. (Dinnertime).
I had the same trouble learning how to use my digital camera. The have so many different modes. For web posting I think simply learning the routing to get the rez down is the most important. Also, don't forget to pick up a card reader like I told you about. Worth every penny. (see pics) and they're pretty cheap.
Jon
Great pics.....We have friends up in the Finger Lakes Region(Phelps, NY) who live in a house finished in 1814......The garage was the original house complete with a hole in the back to stick one's rifle out to shoot the Indians!! The original house was finished in 1790......It's like walking into history when we stay there......During Prohibition, someone had a still in the basement that pumped 1000 gallons of liquor every day! The owners have a plaque that states when the house was raided! This house is now on the National Register for Ontario County......They will be selling in a couple of years.....Interested?...<g>
Your basement looks like theirs........
Pi
That area to shoot guns outta? The historic society made me put some windows in that'll be attached to my master bedroom addition. They called the windows, belly down windows. Its where the colonists laid on their bellies to shoot out of it. Personally I may just blow puffs of weed out of it so KAtrina doesnt catch me.....lol. Nah....been awhile. But if someone comes by with a dube I may not turn it down........heh heh.
Stop by and stay over any time you youre in the area. It'd be fun....
The cee-ment pond is almost done (no kiddin).

Yeah, it is in the original house......It used to be a grist mill and is surrounded by corn, corn, corn.......Hence, the liquor!
Thanks for the invite.......We were supposed to be up there the end of May, but couldn't make it.......Maybe August or September........
cheeze dude! do they still call them dubee's? Or is that a Yiddish werd?
;)
Lay off the smoke and start studying that camera book so we can see more of you.
I grew up in WNY in a house that was "started in 1832 and ain't finished yet". It was a post/beam with oak plank walls that had then been paneled inside with V-groove T&G pine. When I was a kid, Dad did a loan to add a breakfast room and replace the clapboard siding with asbestos which has since gone to ugh vinyl by the succeeding owners. There are stories by preceeding owners that they had dug arrowheads out of the planks when they put the wood clapboards on.
Another story is of the time they went to work in Canada for a couple of years and rented the place out. When they got back, they found that the renters had painted the V-groove in the living room PINK and let the family goat move in with them. LOL
If only your house could talk, what stories it could tell. Maybe you should be meditating INSIDE in stead of in that teepee and listening to the walls.
Get that addition up to stabilize things before the hurricane season and be erected!
;)

Speaking of which... I was photographing a school campus my firm designed in Waco, TX a few weeks ago and there was a house nearby with a large TP in the back yard. I snapped a quick photo with you on my mind but it's on my machine at work. I'll try and remember to post it when I get to the office tomorrow.Kevin Halliburton

Its funny cause my wife thought people were gonna hate me for putting it up but people stop all the time and walk up the hill to my house and ask to see it.
When people ask my wife where we live she tells them and they say, "is it near that house with the tipi"? LOL
