OK…so when I was starving for work I found this
customer that I sorta needed to prove myself to.
They had tons of projects to do and few people
that wanted to take them on for one reason or
another. REAL picky people!!!
They had this stone BBQ built and didn’t wanna
use a solid surface top. She wanted it tiled with
these custom made tiles . Pretty much a
nightmare of a job!!
In spite of how horrible I know it is to use
PT plywood I took the chance. ( i wrote in the
contract that there’s no guarantee on the
longevity of the work…but I’m SURE it’ll last a
lifetime) I actually bought
an extra 1/2 dozen sheets of ply so I had extra to
choose from and thank gawd I did have the extras.
I used 2 layers of 3/4″ ply PL Premiumed together
and SS screws.
I first framed the inside of the BBQ top with
PT 2×4’s. I used a 16 footer for the front curved
side banging in short ones to bend the long boy
into place then shot everything into the concrete
with my Remmington gun.
I also had 3/4″ thick X 18″ L brackets made up.
I notched the top of the concrete 3/4″ deep to
recess the top of the brackets flush and bolted
the other side into the inside of the island wall.
This supported the front cantilevered top
After I had my top on I ripped a piece of 16′ 2×4
into a sliver about 1/2″ thick that I bent along
the top of the front of the ply till it had the curve
my customer was satisfied with…scribed it and cut
it with my jig saw….then belted it smooth and even.
Then I thinset on some 1/2″ wonderboard to the
entire top. Ripped some 2″ strips of WB with my
grinder and thinset and nailed that on the face edge.
I then put two thick layers of Regard on all the WB.
Then I tiled the top and did the edge/border tiles
with Quick set thinset. I hung 2×4 ledges with
clamps to support the edge tiles for an hour or
less till the quick dryin’ thinset dried.
A lot more went into this than i even wanna
remember…ugh.
Those border tiles? they’re about FIFTY BUCKS EACH!!
That entire top…top only…cost them about TEN GRAND!!
Thank gawd I’m done. I could have rebuilt the
twin towers in the time this thing took to build.
BEFORE
2 layer of 3/4″ PT ply over 2×4 PT framing
Redgard over Wonderboard
Laying out my tile plan
My border tiles ( I switched to dark thinset)
All my tiles are on…whewwwwww (pre grout)
From the front
Almost home..(grouted and cleaned up…whewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww)
Fini’ $$$$ : )

Thanks...kinda stupid but it's whatthey wanted so...someone hadda do it.
Also...she returned half the border tiles cause she didn't like em ALL dark. I told her not to but she did anyway. Had to wait two weeks for the new batch.
As it turned out I was right....looked wayyyyyyyyyy better with all darker ones...there was little to no blending of shades. Was either dark or real light...echhhhhhh...I tried keeping the better shaded ones in the front and on the one conspicuous side

It looks awesome, Andy. And I agree with you. The darker border tiles.Glenn
andy your craftsmanship is top notch and i like the tile on top of the island, but i think the border tiles are butt fugly, they don't go with main tiles. to each their own though.
Looks good Andy.
Thanx for sharing. Is this the same house you e-mailed me about?
Chuck S
Thanks Woodarama & Tashler and I agree about those border tiles but everyone has their own taste I reckon. I'm just there to "help" them design it and then build it...not to tell them what they should or shouldn't like although it ain't easy keeping my yap shut...took me yearsssssssss to take the advice I gave my kinds which is. "everything that is in your head doesn't have to come outta yer mouth"...lol.
And Steve...yeh.. I think this was the job I was telling you about. Real happy to be outta there finally. Now I know for the next time I'm there to know what to expect and how to deal with the situation over there. Live N learn. Lucky for them that they're such nice people!!

Click on your name to bring up your profile. Then click "Prefs". Scroll down about 1/2 way until you see the signature box. Not sure how it works on IE. In FF I've got to manually enter the HTML code. So you'd want something like this:<p><img src="http://www.grantlogan.com/someimagefilename.jpg">And it will appear.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

You'd have to pay me big bucks to go back there...lol.
It's about 16' long and about 10' -12' wide behind that BBQ grill
'bout 8' behind the sink.
I forget how high but you can see in the first pic of the bar stools to get an idea.
You wouldn't belive what those stools cost....and theres lots of those chairs around the back patio and pool.....whewwwwwwwwww. Bar stools are about a thou each. Wanted to kill myself when I found that out and thought about what I charged....grrrrrrr

I saw some real nice Mexican trestle sinks that would go nicly with that tile.
Mexican is kinda busy though to use too much of it.

nice looking job.
Isn't it kinda fun to do something that others couldn't figure out how? Especially if the customers are picky?
Yo Shep..I dunno if fun is the right word but I know whatcha mean.
Most people..including the people on John Bridge's tile forum said they'd shy away from doing it the way I intended or any kinda way. That they were skeptical. I sort of already knew what they meant but I had it embedded in my head that I could make it work and make it work well. Thing is though...when you do a gig with all of the skepticism in your own head and then out of the mouth of other professionals it really makes it a nerve racking project......that is..if you care about your work. some people say I worry too much and I really do.....I'm trying to learn how not to but I spose' it's kind of a defense mechanism. Kind of telling myself how I 'can't do it'...until I work it around in my head so many times that by the time it's done...it's usually "over" built...lol. Lemmie tell you...this thing IS over built... At this point I KNOW it's gonna last forever.
Was it fun? NO FRIGGIN' WAY!!!....LOLOLOL...everything after it is fun though now..lol

And you say, "What does this mean?"

Redgard is an incredable product!! Expensive but well worth the added insurance and super easy to apply http://www.custombuildingproducts.com/ProductCatalog/SurfacePrep/WaterproofingAntiFractureMembranes/RedGard.aspx
After I did two heavy coats of Redgard I had to cut a tiny section out to alter the top a hair and the dried Redgard was a really thick rubber I peeled off the top of the piece I cut...it took the top of the Wonderbaord with it which meant it really stuck well...the stuff was a seriously thick coat of rubber membrane embedded in the substrate. I can totally see how it water PROOFS and make it real crack resistant. NExt time I do a shower and don't use Kerdi I'm "definetly " using some Redgard.
It's about $50 a bucket. That top took two buckets and I put it on real thick with a 3/4" nap roller. Washes off the roller easily too with water while it's still wet.
And far as that Blodgett kid goes and BBQ's...well...Brinkman for president...lol

Thanks Bob...yeh I know..overbuilt just lets me sleep better at night..it's the days over building those kinda things that are killer...lol. Especially that thing. Just happen to be almost every day was in the 90's and humid and that thing was dead in the sun...and those tiles got hotter'n hell...anyway...

That property is also a tad too expensive but my guess is that they'd come down in price being it's a new listing. It's also a hair far from a city (25 minutes on mapquest to the heart of A'ville's Home Depot...lol).

What's the interest in Asheville?
California's too expensive and there's too many natural disasters. We looked all over Carmel valley, Monterey.
Next thought was the front range in the Boulder Co. area but thats also too expensive and not quite cozy enough for me although the people are more progressive than down south IMO.
Asheville NC while expensive for them is a far cry cheaper than what I'm used to plus it has a very mixed crowd of people for being in the southern mountains.
The weathers great. you get four seasons and not long cold winters. A bit of a drought there though but nothing significant compared to other places.
I love the mountains there. Problem is...it's probably gonna be the next Long Island soon enough but I figure it'll remain country enough for me in my lifetime.

I think the only downside of the Asheville area is that more and more people are going to find out how great it is. The closest I lived was in Greenville, SC, but my trusty Honda CX500 motorcycle took me north of the state line many times.Good memories.
Jon Blakemore RappahannockINC.com Fredericksburg, VA
I check into the City Data Forum for Western NC and Asheville from time to time and according to them everyone found A'v a ways back and are rippingthe mtns apart.

That was partially why I split the area. I was even way more west in Macon and Jackson and Swain county...and it was growing like a tick with Florida folks moving up and building on everything they could. And most of them were from NY origianlly ( they were what we called "halfbacks", moving halfway back home) and you know how rude them NY'ers are..LOL
Seriously, the Miami crowd was a pain to deal with.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Well...I hate talking about doing something before I actually can do it, but in my head...in the planning stages..I have to run it through some kinda way...sometime...so fer now...and what I think now is...
There's a two parter to it all...like the saying goes in my macrobiotic world..."where there's a front/there's a back"...I figure theres still plenty of really beautiful pretty well secluded and affordable mtn tops there close enough/yet far enough away from the big city of A'ville...oy...so I could still live alone in my own lil' secluded world or run down the mtn every now and again and stuff my pockets with some $cash$ workin' gigs offa the halfbacks or who ever...doesn't matter to me. Allz I know is they have plenty O' $cash$ which can help make it work for me...plus A'ville has it's growing artist community..many Zen centers..even an Aikido dojo among other things...and only 12 hours from NYC where Jolie will be going to school...
I dunno...but in the interim...here I am...kinda thriving in a declining economy...don't ask me how I got any of this together so fast...must mean SOMETHING!! I think it's the "where there's a front/there's a back" thing in motion...but I don't wanna get too psychedelic about it at the moment...lol.
Although THE funniest thing in my head is...ohhh geezz andy...shut the fup already...hee hee...Katrina asked me if I could do almost anything next what would it be. I said buy me a brownstone in Harlem and renovate it...too expensive though....OK shuttin' up already : ) ~

We now specify rumford fireplaces in all of our projects due to aesthetic qualities. Sorry that the lighting on these is so awful. Will re-photograph and send new ones when I get a chance.
Thank you for the compliments on our fireplace/pizza oven/bar-b-que. Also, thanks for thinking of the masons that had to put that thing together. It was really a tough one. In fact, we actually built a scale model of it out of clay prior to construction just to figure out all of the lines and curves. Notice that the pizza oven turret doesn't seem to have a chimney. The flue was carefully angled to just make it into the chimney of the fireplace but give the impression that it does not exist. We joke about how this little ensemble reminds us of a small Cotswold village with all of the different roof lines. The house that belongs to this outdoor fireplace is just in its finishing stages now, so I will definitely be photographing this piece again. View Image

Somebuddy mention "bar-b-que"?
Nice looking tile job, Andy. Redguard? Great stuff. I use it under every wet area tile installation nowdays. Cheap insurance and a breeze to work with.
Speaking of bar-b-que, we have the place all set for our first pot luck shin dig at the new house tomorrow. Got 80 lbs of brickets, 10 lbs of ribs, lots of ice and half the flippin' town expected. Gonna be close to 100 degrees. Bet we'll see some blue hairs hit the deck!
Andy,
Man that thing is inspiring! If the sawdust business doesn't work out for me, I could always try baking. Nothing better than a scratch made pizza, from the dough to the pesto. That's it, pizza tomorrow night, on the grill. BTW, checked out your web site, mighty fine work you do.
Bob
Thanks mucho BobbyB...and yeh..All those Rumford links totally inspire me...can't wait till I finally sell this dump (the Goose Hill Rd Project in my web site) and get onto other things...
