I bought this tool at a moving sale not knowing what it was but thought maybe it could be incorporated into measuring long angled cuts on a saw.
When I stopped back at the sale a few days later I got to talking with the guy that had owned it and he said it was used for cutting down chair legs.
Does anyone know how to use it?

It is a taper jig for the Table saw, used to rip tapers on legs for instance, but any tapered part can be made, not just legs.
The stock fits on the little keeper/pusher, the otherside rides against the fence.

Actually you pretty much hit the nail on the head. That's a tapering jig used in conjunction with a table saw's fence. It's used for making longer rips at a slight angle, such as in tapering the legs of a table. They work alright, and I've had one of these sitting in the shop someplace for years now, but I never really felt safe using it. My preference has always been to build a custom jig using a scrap of plywood as a base and attaching a fixed fence, some end stops, and a cam clamp or two.
I agree about not feeling safe using these jigs. I bought one a while ago. I used it once and threw it away just so I wouldn't be tempted to use it again.
It's easy enough to make a jig as needed from 2 pieces of plywood or just use a circular saw.

WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
Rez, It looks like some type of bevel guage, on a large scale. A taper guage or jig, for a table saw would be much larger.Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
Like Sphere said, except it appears yours didn't come with the little keeper/pusher he referred to. Sears has a picture at http://tinyurl.com/y89omg that shows it (on the left leg).
