Hello,
I am looking at building a small heated out-building with raised heel scissor trusses and vented angled soffits to avoid eave returns, as recommended in https://www.finehomebuilding.com/2019/01/10/design-build-gable-end-eave-design , but I have not been able to find detail drawings for angled soffits and I have not seen many building with angled soffits around where I live.
I’m wondering if anyone has any suggestions for where to find more information on executing angled soffits well and if there any issues with angled soffits that I might not be thinking. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

I've limited experience with angled soffits but have found most of that work pretty straight forward. But just because there's no return doesn't necessarily mean the rake and eve will plane out. One
draw back for angled soffits is if the roof has a steep pitch the tight space may be unreasonable to fasten. I do remember back in my youth being puzzled by soffit returns but really it's no bigggie you just need a plan in your head...
Also I'd add to that that the FHB article on soffit/ cornices was good but a lot of construction details have to be solved in the field. None more so than cornice work imhop. There are fewer structural issues and more diverse situations than in rough framing or maybe even than interior trim.
Hi Oldhand,
Thanks for the pointers. That's quite helpful. The pitch is 6/12, so I think that should leave decent room for fasteners, but I will keep that in mind as I plan it out.
Thanks
