OK, my folks have a post-frame garage, steel sided, with a steel garage door. When the door’s shut, the thing’s pretty much radio-wave-proof, and so the garage door opener remote signal can’t get to the opener. Are there remote antennas available, or is there some other way to get the signal past the steel? It kinda defeats the benefits of an opener, having to get out, go ’round to the back door, and push the opener button, then go back to the car.
Thanks up front –

Go to Sears (or probably GD companies carry the same thing) and buy a replacement receiver system. This is a whole receiver with new "clickers" that hooks up in place of the inside pushbutton. I think the one we have cost about $75 5-6 years ago. Build a reasonably secure, non-metalic box on the exterior of the garage to house the receiver.
Try here.

They sell the replacement xmit/rec that Dan was talking about.
Also they have long range and extended range receivers.
And you can email them questions and they also have forums.
Have you checked the batteries in that remote lately? Dumb question but easy fix.
Are there multiple remotes to the opener? If so do they all work the same or is it just a problem with the one remote. THe remote in question does it work with the door open?
I have installed alot of overhead doors in steel buildings and haven't had this problem. Try reprogramming the remote into the opener. The instructions to the opener will tell you how to do this.
If you cannot get it to work, contact Overhead Door of Kalamazoo or Battle Creek. They will take care of it.
Another fix is installing a window in the front of the garage. Pole barns are fairly easy to install windows in.
Contact the manufacturer of the opener. They may have a kit that will allow you to extend the antennae through to the driveway side of the building, thus eliminating the 'shield'.
