I was over at the orange Borg yesterday. Near the garden supplies, right by the door into the electrical section were two pallets of plastic gallon jugs labeled “Muriatic Acid” 32%. The cardboard cartons were waterlogged and covered with bird [stuff]. In addition, the cartons were sagging, and a couple of bottles were laying on their sides on the floor.
Must have been 60 gallons total–seriously.
I am waiting to read about the 8-year-old kid that runs into those jugs and burns him/her self. Or, the fork driver that backs into the pallets.
Safety last.

Good question!! It was Sunday. I tried to find a manager. I really did. Everybody was too busy selling plants at their Tree Extravaganza.
I should also re-emphasize that the cartons looked MONTHS old. From the dirt around and under the pallet, it had been there for ages.
Two stories, along the same lines . . .
I was at the Depot last week, Tuesday, I think it was, and I went to two different people about their flag still being at helf staff. The period of mourning for the Va Tech shootings was over on Sunday at sunset.
Flag is still at half staff this morning. I thought about just running it up myself. I probably will in another day or two.
Second story, our Lowe's store burned to the ground, and I mean LEVEL to the slab about 8 years ago - they think the origin of this hot, hot fire was some pool chemincals that were spilled and mixed - oxidizer and chlorine or something like that. They didn't stand a chance getting that fire put out.
You were sure right to look for someone to tell, but it might not have done any good.
Greg
I live 7 miles away from Va.Tech , a lot of places are still flying their flags at half mast, I think things will get back to normal once the students go back home for the summer.
Yes, and I'm not trying to rush things, I seem to be more aware of proper flag ettiquette than most. This flag was wrapping around a 500 watt light fixture, is why it caught my attention.
Greg
Driving through PA and NJ yesterday, Monday, there were lots of flags at half mast. I was amazed to see the condition of some flags, even in New York city they were tattered, wrapped round the staff and generally untidy. shouldn't they be taken down at sunset?
Drystone -If the flag is not illuminated at night it should be taken down at sunset or the end of the buisness day, or if its id disrepair or dirty it should be taken down and destroyed, with another one displayed in its place. I thought you were in Scotland as I have followed your posts with intrest, I,m a export of the U.K. myself been over here 45yrs., migrated here with my mom and sister when I was 5.-- My Grandfather in England said he could tell I was becoming a Yank, when my feet started stinking, he said Yanks had the stinkenest feet of any one bunch of people he had ever met.:)
I also meant to say not caring about the condition of ones flag, the common pursuit of manners , cussing eveyother word in the presence of ladies and children, wearing a baseball cap during the pledge of allegiance or while in church and just general bad behaviour in public is something that is all to commonplace anymore.
One of my pet peeves are the guys, usually with greasy hair, whi wear their hats inside buildings--especially in restaurants. You wonder if they ever take it off--like to bathe. (Saw a funny movie where a Japanese guy loved the American West and wore a cowboy hat--in one scene he's in a bathtub with his cowbot hat on.)
>>> ... hats... You wonder if they ever take it off--like to bathe.
Not often. Same types rarely bathe.
>>> wore a cowboy hat--in one scene he's in a bathtub with his cowbot hat on
Similar scene in Crocodile Dundee ;>)
I arrived back in Scotland this morning after a few days in the US. We visited New York but moved over to NJ and PA when we could not get a hotel room. We found ourselves in Bethlehem PA but there was no room in the Inn because they were holding a Bar Mitzva. That led to us driving up through the slate belt of PA which was interesting because it looks like the slate mining areas in Wales and the west of Scotland. Lots of brick houses up there with slate roofs - quite a contrast to the normal wooden structures.
The Continental Airlines link between Newark NJ and Edinburgh or Glasgow, Scotland is a great way to get across the Atlantic.
"We found ourselves in Bethlehem PA but there was no room in the Inn because they were holding a Bar Mitzva."

I think the flag should fly at half mast a week for every person we lose in Iraq
Soounds good until you think about it.
There were a minimum of 618,000 casualties in the civil war.
618,000 casualties X 7 days per casualty = 4,326,000 days
4,326,000 days / 365.25 days/year = 11, 844 years.
1865 + 11,844 = 13,708 That is roughly 550 generations from now.
As of the end of April there have been 3,300 named dead US Service personell in "Operation Iraqy Freedom". There are another 98 who have not been identified, pending notification of next of kin.
3,300 X 7 = 23,786
23,786 / 365.25 = 65 years, 1 month, plus a few days.
I doubt my great-great grandchildren would have any clue that the flag ever was flown anywhere but, at half staff.
If we flew the flag at half mast one day for each casualty, it would be over nine years before it was raised again.
Yes, they should unless they fall into a small category of places where flags stay up at all times (Armories, etc.).
as long as no one gets hurt..

From what I've read, if you mix pool chlorinator with oil, you have a fire. Makes sense, as you say, chlorine is an oxidizer. Oily rags will spontaneously combust, so adding an oxidizer would help it along.
story about depot. I want to get a gas trimmer. I catch a plumber in the gardenig section. call over somebody... nobody comes. find another guy... only a plant "specialist". still no one comes, grab the cheepest one, it has been amazing.
moral: forget about getting help at depot.
Did you bring this to the attention of the store manager or did you just walk away?
my advise in all situations is to run away!!!!!!!run run run away!!!!!!!!!!!!-worth exactly 2 cents!
I can hit an HD from my front stoop with a potato cannon--it's about a block. I've tried everything to get them to do something about chronic and laughable inventory problems. Waited around to talk to managers for hours, spent several hours on the phone with customer service and HQ.I hardly every go there anymore, as it is completely hopeless to get what you need. They went weeks without a 1/2" copper 90's. They haven't had garage door closing mechanisms for more than a year, even though there are three empty shelves labeled for them, in the middle of a section with _every_ other piece of garage hardware.I do most of my business in a local yard--prices are competitive, but the service is top notch. They will deliver a piece of anything, quickly and well. Can't imagine working with a big box.
If you were really bothered you should have went to the customer service counter and told them that if they didn't fix the prob. you would call the EPA; they are both open on Sundays!.
Same kind of thing at the local Walmart store.
I went in and right there at the customer service desk where overworked girls were handling returns etc, was a tippy wheeled cart full of returned stuff, including about five automotive batteries.
It was sitting there in the aisle leading to the bathrooms with folks jostling each other to gfet past it.
I grabbed it and wheeled it in behind their counter and waited for attention and informed them of the danger. They thanked me very much politely.
When I left the store, guess where that friggin'cart was! No manager to be found!

I was at Sports Authority the other day during a rain storm.
The roof was leaking onto a rolling rack of Crocs and spilling over onto the floor.
I told an employee, I said just wanted them to know so no one would slip.
What did she do?
She moved the rack of Crocs out of the way and walked away!!
Three seconds later a dude walked right though the now forming puddle.

John,
With that said, there's no excuse why you couldn't have found someone to make a complaint about.
All of us that are concerned are "Matured" or Baby Boomers. When were you last impressed by a mature 20 something person.
"When were you last impressed by a mature 20 something person?"
At the risk of participating with a troll, I will give some replies:
A High School senior who played Anne Frank with tremendous sensitivity
Those University of Chicago college students who came to the aid of Carole Mosely Braun.
The Hispanic young man who drove me home from the service station while my car was being repaired.
People working with me in a Habitat for Humanity home
College students and other young people doing really grunt work helping people clean up after Katrina.
Now--I suspect you are going to rant about the poor quality help at Home Depot --this topic WAS about Home Depot-- but I don't want the blame to be put upon the workers. I know too many of them, and they are disgusted by the working conditions where they cannot use their intelligence because of computer systems and management techniques set in place by people of more "mature" ages.
Since I suspect you are a troll, just what IS your age? And, just what are your qualifications enabling you to make these comments?
You right! I'm a Baby Boomer and we were the ones who shaped the youngsters attitudes. At HD I don't see Baby Boomers running the show. The original Owners of HD were BB and HD was better when he owned it, not anymore.
I ran a High School Marching Band, worked with Habitate for Humanity. My son when to help in New Orleans twice very few wanted to go with him, they partied in Cabo instead. 80% of the construction worker are now Hispanic here. None of the younger parents watched their kids perform. That 10% of the good kids are getting overrunned by the majority.

For one thing, if one HD burns down another will spring in its place much like a new leg will grow on a starfish. As a liberal, I will tell you that I too am discouraged by the current state of crudeness of our culture and no, I don't believe its all 'dem librul ideals". It has to do with communities and families being disconnected from each other, with no one having the time or the inclination to teach their youngsters decency and from a media culture that celebrates the brashiest and the most horrid behavior because that's what sells. People apparently can't get enough of it, because its everywhere, on the tube, on the newsstand, in the parking lot and in people's living rooms. I hate it. Kids don't remove their hats in a building, girls run around looking like stupid tramps and call themselves 'empowered', no one has table manners, people shout at each other, call names, resort to violence all too quickly. Its sick.Maybe I'm just getting old.I don't believe that the individual owner of HD has much to do with how its run. They follow a tried and true management structure that pays off the shareholders first and trickles the funds from the top down, the worker is squeezed to the max and the customer receives the results, but learns to accept it begrudgingly as the way things are. HD and WalMart challenge you to go somewhere else. They know you'll use them eventually, no matter how much you or I hate them.

"Maybe I'm just getting old."Do not for a minute qualify what you said by saying maybe you're getting old. What you said couldn't have more truth to it at all. It was perfect, and reflects my sentiments exactly. Very well put.
Thanks :)

Good grief woman! What are you saying here?
An annual rent of from twenty-five to a hundred dollars (these are the country rates) entitles him to the benefit of the improvements of centuries, spacious apartments, clean paint and paper, Rumford fire-place, back plastering, Venetian blinds, copper pump, spring lock, a commodious cellar, and many other things. But how happens it that he who is said to enjoy these things is so commonly a poor civilized man, while the savage, who has them not, is rich as a savage?Parolee # 53804
"Good grief woman! What are you saying here?"I'm saying get that hat off your head right now before I pull it off and throw it away do you hear me? I was actually recruited for a position with them.
They (at the time) were looking for one or two knowledgable people for their store near here. Kinda the "Answer Man " role.
Pay was actually quite decent as were benifits etc. for that one position.
I passed on it due to other concerns.

Where do you get those extracts at the foot of your postings?
They are the writings of Thoreau's 'Walden's Pond'.

I'm 28 and I'm sick of BBs complaining about the younger generation!
Can't you reach back in your aging memory banks and remember how you felt when you were in your 20s?
A little big picture advice...top quality people do not work as a "customer associate" at the HD for minimum wage or slightly above it.
:)
"I'm sick of BBs complaining about the younger generation!"Don't fret. Your generation has a lot going for it, and a lot of good people. We didn't like it either back then. Live for another 28 years, raise children as best you can, then come talk to me.
"Can't you reach back in your aging memory banks and remember how you felt when you were in your 20s?A little big picture advice...top quality people do not work as a "customer associate" at the HD for minimum wage or slightly above it."I sure as hell can reach back in my memory and remember when respecting your neighbor was expected, not a voluntary act worthy of high praise and notice. Media has become all pervasive, our culture has changed and not for the better. As for associates. Better think twice the next time you enter a big box store; some of those people have no other alternatives and/or are struggling to get to a position or career that will pay them a living wage. It would do you well to resist the temptation to use them as the prototype for your flimsy social construction of hierarchies. It ain't quite that simple.Listen up to the old folks and respect that we've been observing things while we've been around, kiddo.
My point about HD associates:
- Don't judge an entire generation based on the behaviour of people who make minimum wage in a totally de-motivating work environment. Hardly fair...
And don't talk babble at me about my "flimsy social construction of hierarchies" because you don't know a thing about me.
Stop being bitter that the younger generation is shaping the future instead of listening to old timers...you had your time to shape society, and your generation certainly left their mark...too bad you can't go quietly into retirement and hand the reins over to the younger folks.
:)

"Flimsy social construction" absolutely, I am tired of people assuming that all low wage workers are shiftless morons. That was my point, so no, I'm not 'judging' your generation, whichever one that is by the way.One thing about our culture is that by and large we never learn from our mistakes, the past is wiped away and a new day is started and the same idiocy is started all over again. That is our culture and yes its stupid and I'll say so whenever I please thank you.Considering that most executives consider their real productive years to be around in their 50's and 60's and that older workers on record are usually the most dependable and skilled contributors to the workforce, I'll back them up. I respect my elders, that's the way I was brought up and I believe there's a lot of wisdom in their experience. That being said, I'm sure and I know there's plenty of younger generation folks that were brought up well are smart, decent and motivated. I thought that went without saying.

"Lots of people talk to animals," said Pooh. "But...Not very many listen"
In the mid- to late-60' my parents complained about teenagers--musci, drugs, music, sex, music, lack of respect, music.... They talked about how awful the demonstrations against the Vietnam War were; how stupid the women's rights demonstrations were. We lived in Phoenix, AZ, at the time.
In the 70's they continued to complain about teenagers--drugs, sex, music, lack of respect, vulgar language, no morals, no church participation, no manners. And movies and TV--atrocious!! Nothing like the wonderful movies they used to watch. Their only teenager at the time was valedictorian, National Merit Finalist, adored by teachers, church every Sunday, never caused any problems.... We lived outside a town of 1500 people in northern Idaho.
In the 80's they continued to complain about "popular culture"--same old stuff. And, because they were heavily involved with the schools (both teachers), added complaints about abusive parents, incompetent social workers, school administrators who wouldn't let them do their jobs. One brother got married young and had a kid right off--lots of complaints about all of that. While I waited quite a while to get married, I didn't marry the person they thought I should--and we didn't have kids right away--all three of these were sources of concern.
90's--more of the same. Plus there were a few grandkids around--two of us were not "effective parents"; the other two were "such family men". (So far us "ineffective parents" have the nicer, more successful kids.)
New century. Parents demonstrated just how intelligent and better than everyone else they really were. We no longer associate with them.
While there certainly are many things that concern me regarding "kids these days", don't know that it's really any worse than when I was a teenager--different, but not necessarily worse overall. Think it depends considerably on your focus.
Kathleen
I read somewhere that the ancient Greeks complained about how their children showed no respect to their elders, so it's been going on for a while now....
There is some disorder specific to pigeons which means that their toes and feet become deformed. An article is a scientific paper a few years ago blamed this on chemicals, pollution etc etc until someone pointed out that the Greeks had noted this deformity and blamed it on their kids.
