replace about 1/3 of the framing.. ( 2/3 replaced about 6-7 years ago)... new rail... lose the built-in benches ( not to code )..
the old posts were 4x10 cedar.. but the band joists were rotted out..

new joists and doubled band first... then the Trex posts.. with a detailed bottom..

Detailed bottom . . . ouch! Watch out if you are crawling around under that deck!
I didn't know Trex made a 4x4. No one has them here. How much are they?
where is "around here"?

Mike,
What's up with the weather out there?? One guys got short sleeve's, anothers wearin a hat and a sweatshirt.........the beach foto, I see shorts and the guy on the end looks like he's freezing.
Nice views, nice work as always. I know about the breeze thing, it never stops does it?
I assume the Trex post looses it's strength when notched?
Eric
eric... that Second Beach is a big surfing beach... saw a few "kite surfers".. huge parabolic kites on about 600 ' of line... the surfers can actually do a broad reach across the wind..

Hi Mike
Have you ever gone back to a trex job after a few years to see how it has weathered?
I might have missed the answer, but why did you put a point on the post BOTTOMS? Does it keep moisture from collecting and wicking into the trex or sumthin?
Phil
phil" the pointed bottom is just a conceit..
a while ago we did a deck with rail posts... normally our rail posts are also the support posts.... IE: the deck supports continue thru the deck and support the rail..
in some cases this is not possible so i like to let our rail posts extend below the deck for a little greater strength ( as opposed to cutting them flush with the bottom of the band joist )
once you do this they need some ornamentation , so we put a pyramid cut on them..
which would you rather see , looking up at the underside of a deck ?
a flush , square cut post.. or an extended post with a pyramid bottom ?

Depends...... Am I the guy raking the leaves under the deck area? OUCH! LOL!
What you did really looks great. If you ever get the chance, take a look at how it has weathered after 2 years.
