If you are going to be inspected and have to meet codes, you'll need a continuous rail.
As far as I know, continuous rail is only required in commercial application. My question is can wall rail swith sides??
I wouldn't be surprised if it depends, to a degree, on the size of the landing.
Codes do vary, depending on location. According to many, the requirement that a handrail be continuous, includes the understanding that its continuous through the flight of stairs. The flight of stairs (in your case a run of 6 treads) ends at the landing, and at that point, another flight begins. I have changed the sides of rail at a landing with no trouble from inspectors.
Kind of what I was thinking;just not 100%
