Rich: 60 inch diameter for me. The clients wanted me to build it 48 inches, and I refused to do it. You can buy them that small, but they are dangerous with the little footing you have.
They ended up cutting out the subfloor and let me put this one in. I have posted this spiral before, but in case you havent seen it.......
*Stan, I agree, 60" is the least. I hate the smaller ones because of the so called walkline, you always end up turning side ways to use it safely. I recall a few? issues back in FHB. there was a cover story on a similiar spiral, with the same staved colum, tenioned treads etc.. Was that one of yours? The article was well written also.--GEO--
*George:I know the article you are talking about...wasnt mine. The spiral I posted a picture of is the result of reading that fine article you are talking about.I built the column with staves and rope clamps, but the rail was totally different. Thats a two piece handrail seperated by 1.5 inch maple balls. It was all hand planed and took about a week just to make the rail.
*Stan,Thanks, I'm thinking down the line I want to access my attic on a permanant basis. Framed the floor out with 2x12 knowing someday I could expand my living area. What's the width of the walk line on those in the picture?Rich
*Rich:The walking line is different on a spiral due to the fact that you basically hug the rail as close as you can. Normally, I would figure 15 inches from the center of the handrail, but this doesnt apply here.
