Any experience with Hitachi 1/2 drill?

I’m in the market for a 1/2 drill. I own tools from various makers but I’m really starting to like the hitachi stuff. Just bought a recip saw and I really like it. I also own a hole-hawg, so I’m familiar with Milwaukee’s legendary quality in the drill department. Has anyone got experience with both tools? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I've had a Hitachi DV20V2 1/2" hammer drill for some years. It's a tough tool and I've had no problems with it so far except through what I think is a major design flaw - the lock-on button is placed so it almost always gets hit when you pull the trigger. Mechanically, it's a good tool. That lock-on button is potentially dangerous. Buy Milwaukee if the new Hitachis are like mine.

It would have to be the Milwaukee.
You want corded or cordless?
Who ever invented work didn't know how to fish....
I think I want to go corded. Does your answer vary with the power source?
Some Hitachi stuff is great - others so-so.
I had one that only lasted a season, and don't think we worked it all that hard, but who knows? I'd vote for the Mikee
Excellence is its own reward!
Hitachi is made in China. Once in a while something worthwhile comes from there, but not often. Milwaukee is still good and made in the USA. Get 'em while they last.
Don't forget to check out the speed you need. Milwaukee 1/2" drills go 850 rpm, max. This may be too slow for some applications. The Hitachis seem to have faster ones available. For power and power-to-weight, Milwaukees are the best, though.
Hope this helps. Rich.
My Milwaukee magnum 1/2" hammerdrill will turn pretty fast in high range, I think 2500 rpm, but the regular magnum will turn only 850.
Good point. When I was buying my last one, I only looked at the regular drills, which only go to 850 rpm in the 1/2 inch size. I never thought of looking at hammer drills, but checking them out, that would have been a good idea. I was just looking for a gutsy 1/2" unit at the time.
Thanks. Rich.
