Any plumers in the house

| Posted in General Discussion on July 12, 2005 09:20am

I have what I think is a small problem. The tub drain stopper on my tub is one of those that you turn a quarter turn and it drops down to seal the tub. My question is how in the blazes do you get it off. I have turned and turned in every direction and way possible. I need to remove so I can unclog the drain. I think my wife’s hair has the drain clogged. I know it has to be simple and I am just not quick enough to figure it out. Thanks for any advice.

Get down in there on your hands and knees, put your reading glasses on (at least that's what I would have to do)  and pull the drain plug all the way up .  I think you will see a phillips head screw in there that fastens it together.  That's how mine went in.

Ok, thanks for the info. I knew it would be something stupid that I did not think of. And you are probaly right about the way I will have to do it. I mean the reading glasses and stuff. Thanks again I will try that tonight when I get home.

I mean the reading glasses and stuff.

I used to get no small amount of guff for having a garage-sale-found swingarm magnifying lamp--until I needed one and had it <g>

A bright light can help see/read things on plumbing fittings, so include that on your list to take to the tub.

A "beater" beach towel is also not a bad idea while you're at it.  Not only will it hold bits as you take them out of the drain, but it helps you keep from scratching the tub with cell phone, pager, keys, belt buckle, etc. (and can be decent padding if one is laying on their belly to work on the drain in the tub--not that I'd know anything about it . . . <g>)Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)

Well I never was able to get it off. There was not a screw that I could find anywhere on the shaft. And when I turned the drain stopper the shaft did not turn at all so if there is a screw anywhere then it has to be facing the wall of the tub. But I did get it unclogged. I found a little thing called Zip-it. It is a thin plastic stick that is real fexible and has little notches on the side of it. It really grabs the hair and stuff. It fit right under the stopper and cleaned it out. It really worked great, I hound it at HD. I just get so proud of myself sometimes. Now if I could just figure out how to reuse all the hair I got out of the drain then I could fix the bald spot on the back of my head. But, I guess the good park of having the bald spot on the back of my head is atleast I can not see it, even if I have my glasses on. Thanks for the help.

If its like the one I had, don't lift it when you unscrew, and prongs on the bottom of the stopper will engage the lower section of the drain.  If you lift while you unscrew, you'll be turning forever!  (use pliers if necessary)

I did get the drain unclogged with a thing I found at HD called a Zip-it. I did look for a screw but there was none. Just for kicks tonight I will try unscrewing it with it in the down position. Your are so right about it spinning forever with it lifted up. Thanks for the help.

First time I had to deal with this, I just went to the hardware store and fiddled with one on the shelf until i completely understood how it worked, then went home and found i could almost do it with my eyes closed.  I seem to recall having to unscrew the overflow plate before I could get it out, but it's been a while ... and according to an episode of 'ask this old house', there are at least 2 basic designs out there (although I've only ever encountered one) ....

I tried your idea at HD, but they would not let me open the package. But it does seem that we have found the 2 designs. One with a screw on the shaft and one that unscrews with the stopper down. Thanks for all the help and the ideas.
