Anyone going to PCBC in SF?

madmadscientist | Posted in General Discussion on June 1, 2007 01:23am

I just got invited to check out the exhibit floor at the Pacific Coast Builders Conference.  I’ll be looking mostly at ‘Green’ Products.  Has anyone been to this show before and is it worth a day to poke around the exhibits?

From the website the exhibit halls look humongous.  I plan on spending most of the day there.  If you see a long haired guy with a grey goatee pestering some poor green builder its probably me, you should come over and say hello.

From what I've heard, you should go, and I wish I could too. It's not cheap to get in, but the main issue for me is living too far away.

I'll be in SF in August...when is it?

I don't know if you are aware of West Coast Green, but that will be going on in September (I think the 20th-22ndish). Also not cheap, but there are a variety of rates, and I think you might even be able to work it to get in free. zak can probably chime in on this, I think he might have done that last year. For some reason, I got it free.

August?  We'll leave the light on for you.Heck said it first. I just agreed with him.

James check it out if you haven't seen this post  of mine 90479.23 .

My older daughter Niko in San Francisco picked Katrina up from the airport Friday afternoon  (Niko's baby shower this weekend) and they went straight to Sebastopol to speak with an agent there even though I kinda already nixed the idea of moving there being everything for sale is so ugly on crap property for a real  lot of money. If nothing else I decided farm land just doesn't turn me on. Rolling fields. Its pretty but it just isn't me. You know,,vineyard country. I like it where its more rugged amd diverse. I'd like more WOW factor. I'm looking to be within a few hours of Niko and her husband Caleb especially now that they're having a baby.

Praying I get what need for this place in August, Sept. Its looks leaps and bounds better than when you were here. A year does a lot. All the landscaping we had done has even matured a lot and looks really beautiful... so our fingers are crossed. Just wish the housing market was better but one thing that's good is this dump ain't no cookie cutter house.

The second we get back from SF in August we'll list the house. after the summer when the leaves fall it won't look nearly as nice. I still need a month or two to tighten things up here.

        We shall see!

All depends on what part of the county. I'm in Napa, and we definitely have the vineyards, but there is also Lake Berryessa at the northeast, and wooded mountains to the west. Marin is also pretty nice.Within a few hours of SF, you ought to be able to find what you are looking for. Best of luck, and congrats on the new grandkid on the way.

          1. andybuildz | Jun 13, 2007 02:49pm | #10

Thanks SB...Speaking of Marin, I was looking in Berkeley too as a back up. Nice views and very expensive for any of those views and zero property. Might work as an investment(redo/flip). I'll see whats available in all these places after the summer..Who knows. If I had to move today I'd be in trouble cause I see little I like anywhere...ugh.

I'd bet the closer in to the city and all the action, the less likely you are to find a place with a yard. And all the prices around here are crazy, but if you can swing it, I've always thought CA to be a great place for real estate investment.Best of luck to you, and I hope you find just what you are looking for.

          3. jimblodgett | Jun 14, 2007 05:11pm | #12

Yeah, Andy.  CA is great for investing, great climate, lots of jobs, laid back people, everything you could ask for.  Western Washington sucks.  (Oregon is somewhere in between).

I'm pretty sure you can still get into WA with a passport, but they are tightening the southern and eastern borders - getting WAY too crowded. Huck said it first. I just agreed with him.

Okay here's my take on the PCBC exhibits.

First off don't go on the last day of the show where admission is free and EVERY Tom, Dick and Harriet are there.  Also on the last day the people working the booths are dragging and seem to be primarily just interested in tearing the booths down and getting the heck out of there.

    2.  If your badge says architect on it they all want to talk to you.

    3. Booth babes are hot!!

We were mostly looking at green stuff but the booths were not organized in any sensible manner and they there was no way to discern if a booth was selling green stuff from a distance.  Like a banner or a green flag or something?

All the solar manf. there had solar integrated roof tiles on display.  These are meant to be part of the roof on cement shingled roofs or S-tile roofs.  Apparently 70% of the new housing stock in CA has cement shingles and 30% has S-tile with non one putting regular comp shingles on new houses???

There were several fancy garage door manf. there that I liked.  Doors that look pretty convincingly like ye olde tyme carriage house doors that are actually roll up doors.

If you are a pro in the area I would recommend it if you can spare a day or two.  Its really hard to see everything in one day.  I'd do two 3/4 days and have time to talk to the reps there.
