Anyone have knee pads that stay up on…

| Posted in Tools for Home Building on March 2, 2002 12:15pm

*
I’ve gone through a few sets of Nicholas and other brands (using velcro straps) that always seem to slip down off my knees when I’m walking upright. Drives me nuts. It doesn’t seem to matter if I’m wearing pants, overalls or shorts. Same deal every time. I’d like to spring for Patella T’s for better protection but don’t want to if they will be slipping down as bad as these lighter ones.

Any suggestions? Anyone use Patellas? Do they last?

You can buy pants and overalls with pockets that the knee pads slip into. Best thing I've ever found.
    Carhartt is what I wear.

*They last a good long time and when they do wear thin I have momma replace them. As a matter of fact she says "if you want to try it, just make some knee pockets out of an old pair of Levis and get someone to sew them onto your work pants".

*I have used two different ways to protect my knees. I would slip a piece of horsehair pad between the layers of the double knee carpenters bibs and held them in place with big safety pins, works great!!!!.I have tried every kneepad I could find Did not like any of them, always pinching the back of my legs. Finally spularged and bought a set of PRO KNEE, this are and were great because they were taken when they stole my tools. They are pricey but are the best set that I have used . [email protected]

*Try this: ...materials.worn out pair of athletic socksstyrofoam meat tray from supermarket your pork chops came wrapped induck tapeCut meat tray in half. Cut "foot part" off socks, and fold up each sock "foot" in half of meat tray. Tape in to make "pad". Slide "ankle" part of sock up around knee, slip in meat tray "pad".

Was I supose to remove the pork chops first....

*I had a minor leauge catcher that worked for me, he turned me on to an old pair of back catchers pads, they support the whole leg from the knees down and are a dream come true, I can set tile for 3 or 4 days without pain, it is great.

          7. Ron_Teti | Feb 21, 2002 05:51pm | #11

*I dunno how well they stay on but the ones from Duluth look pretty good....jelled filled. I know some experts who need them all day... my coworkers they'll know which ones stay on the longest :)

*Mad Dog; I get the high end foam pads (the grey ones) with the wide velcro straps, wrap the straps around the back of my knees, tie one knot in the strap, then put the velcro ends together.I've got the skinnyest legs on the planet, and I can wear these things all day with few adjustments.

*dawg.. these are the soft blue ones with the two soft rubber straps.... mine are about two years old..they stay up after you fool with them a little

*Jeff, I have a set of those monster pads and quite frankly I'm looking to replace them. not only do they slip down but it hurts like hell when they "roll" out of place because of that stupid nub design.

          11. Bucksnort_Billy | Feb 23, 2002 05:21am | #15

*So, beanie, elucidate...brand name, supplier, my knees might want to date you...

*Barwalt, great pads, but no matter how much I monkey with the straps, I always know they're there...that's what I wear, but there's gotta be something better...puleeze. And who wants to wear long pants zll the time, ok, I mean who that's sane...

          13. Mike_Smith | Feb 23, 2002 07:04am | #17

*bucksnort .. yur right.. but so far i haven't worn my barwalts to the beach....

*Maybe we could get jobs that require ass pads instead of kneepads, huh?

          15. Ralph_Wicklund | Feb 23, 2002 08:49pm | #19

*I got those blue pads too. They do the job, even if the strap pinches the back of my knees after all day.MD, Your pads will stay in place but you've got to quit trying to walk around upright. Our chosen profession hasn't evolved that far yet.

          16. Barry_E | Feb 23, 2002 10:59pm | #20

*My shop is full of kneepads that I've tried and can't wear.Trying to decide if I want to spend the big bucks for the proknees. Maybe if I returned the others I could afford them.http://proknee.com/

          17. Steve_Schefer | Feb 27, 2002 01:51am | #21

*MD -- How about contact cement or duct tape. No problem wearing shorts then. Just make sure to shave your legs first.. Humm, maybe thats not such a good idea if your working construction. LOL... Hey I'm in a good mood.. Mom just bought me a new truck ! Yeee Haww. Yup, its a Chevy HD...

          18. Mad_Dog | Feb 27, 2002 05:36am | #22

*Steve,Nice mom. Mine helped me paint my apartment last weekend. I'd have to think hard, truck or no painting. If it was a Ford, I'd take the paint job for sure.I bought the monster pads because they were cheap and I needed them yesterday. They fall down on my pants too, same problem as before.I'll break down and invest in the expensive pads soon.

          19. SamD_ | Feb 27, 2002 04:52pm | #23

*Steve M, I had a set of those monster pads and had the same problem you describe, they "roll over". Took 'em back the day after I bought them. I'll take my Ford over painting, any day......

          20. Steve_Schefer | Feb 27, 2002 07:25pm | #24

*MD - Mom is wife.. The kids gave her the nicname "Mom" and for some darn reason it stuck. In return I bought her a new Caddy DTC last night. We had a blast chasing deer last night with the infrared vison. No shooting, just having fun.

          21. Tom_Hajek | Mar 02, 2002 12:15am | #25

*I've tried almost every type of knee pad made over the last twenty years. I finally wised up a year and a half ago (aftyer two knee surgeries), and I splurged on a pair of Pro-Knees. These are by far the most comfortable knee/shin protection I've ever tried. I find that when I kneel with them on that my weight is not put so much on my knee caps but spread along the entire lenght of my shins making them VERY comfortable. I look at it this way I dont skimp when it comes to buying tools so I have no reason to be cheap with saftey equipment, I would like my body to last at least until retirement (yeah right)
