Anyone seen one of these floating around? Center support rod for a closet?

netrate | Posted in Construction Techniques on November 1, 2012 08:14am

I have two sites that carry them, but they want $20 for shipping on a $1.99 product.  Trying to do it cheaper (of course)

      and Dave........

I've probably got one in my coffee can of misc. hooks.

      I might remember to look.

    Get off your duff Dave

and go to a good hardware store-they should have it and if not-they can order from their hardware supplier-and there's no big deal shipping and handling.

Go to a mom and pop store.

    thanks.

I have searched online and two "Re-Stores" in my area for it.  It was a little frustrating because at the one ReStore (which handles all kinds of things like that), the lady stated at the one store, and I quote "I have never seen one of those".   Also checked the local Home Hardware, home depot and Lowes.  Nada.  I was going the online route, but as I said the shipping isn't worth it.  I know I can buy the entire kit (the extendable rod) with the hook for around $20.00, but I don't need all of that.  Just the hook.  As usual, I the hook (that is now missing) and it must have gotten thrown out during the renovation.

        alright Dave

I'll look in the shop in the next few days if I remember....................

I've certainly seen the same thing as steel strap rather than rod (ie, flat rather than round).  Plain old rod support, available at most hardware stores and "home centers".

But by the time you've driven all over town and wasted several hours on it, $20 in shipping is cheap.

(And, of course, you could make the thing in half an hour, if you're not too fussy about appearances.)

    Dave

We've got company this weekend and when they leave I'll be going to a job for a couple hours.  If the NFL isn't overly interesting nor the thought of outdoor yard work too captivating, I'll take a walk out to the shop and root around.

Hey Cal, did you get much effect from Sandy?  I wonder how the old breaktime gang from the coast faired the storm?  We had a good bit of wind and rain and a speck of snow with the usual problems that brings.

        Mark

Two days of constant 25/30mph, with gusts up to maybe 40/50.  No rain to speak of but enough cold drizzle/wind on Wednesday to not whack the little white ball.

Mike and Helen were w/o power for a day-I've seen no reports how the house under construction fared.

Shep is ok, but was w/o the amenities I believe I read.

FatRoman is fine, no word from Andy and Katrina.

It helped that the leaves were down, not so along Lake Erie-the warm waters hold leaves on the trees a bit longer and with that wind off the lake.................wow.  Out by Sandusky with all that open water-there were some pretty damn impressive 15 ft waves!

The river here even came up a bit-otherwise it's hardly flowing.

Didn't have to cut our way out of the driveway-just twigs.  Osage orange harvest made easy.

I heard about the lake waves on the news.   I hope Andy and Katrina are OK, but I bet Andy is out working in his neighborhood helping neighbors.

            Their place............

I'm trying to remember, but I think there were trees around his newer place.  Hope they stayed up.

See if there are any companies around that do closet installs.  They would likely have them.

  6. DanH | Nov 04, 2012 09:16am | #10

(It occurs to me that one reason you're having trouble finding one is that they probably don't float.)

    Center support rod

I used a short piece of 1x material, drilled a hole the size of the rod plus 1/8, cut to length to the shelf above. Sawed in two, put the halve over the rod, put a wood screw in it to hold it together and screwed through the shelf into the endgrain. It ws a Sunday evening, i live 10 mi. from the nearest store and I needed to get the job done. It's lasted 25 years.
